Icon46 Vancouver 2011 Riot - first conviction

it's nice to see the justice system finally getting to this....

Quote:
The rioters who participated in the chaos that swept through downtown Vancouver after the Stanley Cup final last year should be punished not just for their own actions, but for the destruction wrought by the entire mob, a judge ruled Thursday as he sentenced the first person convicted in the riot to 17 months in jail.

Ryan Dickinson, 20, admitted to trashing an unnmarked police car and vandalzing a clothing store, but he claimed he was merely "caught up in the moment" and argued his crimes weren't as serious as other rioters who were on the streets that night.

But provincial court Judge Malcolm MacLean rejected that argument, concluding that even though Dickinson didn't assault anyone, set fires or loot stores, his actions nonetheless encouraged others to do so.

How does a young 20 year-old man with a troubled upbringing from a broken home who is out on bail obtain the funds to travel to Vancouver for the riot? Curious.

This is still dragging on?

It's going to run right up until the 2012 riot and things will really get congested.

Just don't send them all to the same place or you'll have one heck of a prison riot to deal with.

P.S. Don't take a dive in the shower.

Wow... interesting to compare with the response to the London riots of last summer.

As of three weeks ago, the Crown Prosecution Service in London had prosecuted 1,371 people so far and there were 610 defendants still in the court system for riots which happened two months later than Vancouver's.

A prosecutor for London's CPS told the Guardian on 30 January:
Quote:
"It was interesting getting people to court very quickly, while it was all still fresh in everyone's mind, with the evidence, and seeing how many people pleaded guilty.

"There is something to be learned there about speedy justice … making sure you get the right evidence into court. There is none of this playing the system so everyone forgets, or witnesses don't turn up."

"We have dealt with 2,000 finalised cases, but every time we get rid of some, more come into the system. We are still getting cases charged and coming in every week."

London's riots were a tad bit more violent and had more severe implications for the state of London society.

Not to mention the pseudo police state they have running over in the UK.

As much as people may say that this is good and that people who participated in the riot are "losers", it's still an interesting subject. There's been cases where a group of people watch a woman get raped and not one of them call 911 because they think someone else will do it. The mob mentality is fascinating, it's one of those things that proves that we are animals after all.

We're trained from a very young age to fit in with our peers and act "cool". This is basically what happens when the "cool" people choose to vandalize and loot. If you had the group of 4 or 5 "cool" kids in a grade 2 class to do something, there would be 20 kids that copied them and then 4 or 5 "social outcasts" who didn't. It's interesting how we think we grow older and mature, when the same things happen in every age group.

It's easy to say that you would condemn every "bad" thing in the world, but I guarantee that you have participated in something that will make you out to be a hypocrite.

I am glad that a new thread was started. When some threads reach page 234234 it is hard to follow them anymore.

When there is such a big turning point in a story line I think a fresh thread is the way to go.

I also am glad that they didn't go easy on this kid, an example needs to be set. Not just for Vancouver, but for all of Canada.

The second part of this statement is patently untrue. There is a dearth of uniformed officers in every major metropolitan centre across the UK. The decision was taken years ago to rely on CCTV technology to catch and help deter crime and the standard police constable's (PC) role has been greatly diminished.

Things may have been a bit rushed over here in terms of sentencing and also a bit draconian, but no one other than the guilty and the families of the guilty are complaining.
