I would say it is more than that.

Would you cheer at the end of your friends ceremony (regardless of how special he/she is), knowing that another ceremony is taking place the second yours ends and that by yelling you are ruining the other people's ceremony?

To me this whole thing is just an example of people thinking that their own situation is special and therefore they don't have to follow the rules. It shows a complete lack of respect for any of the people whose families don't even get to hear their child's name when he is called because some other people thought their kid deserved special treatment.

If there's anyone who deserves special recognition for graduating high school (an "achievement" that is all but meaningless, IMO), it's people like him who really had to push themselves just to meet the minimum standards.

I was a huge slacker in HS, but you think I should have received special, personalized recognition at a dinner party because academic achievement came easily to me. Meanwhile, my friend worked harder than most of our graduating class just to get the minimum passing grade in a few mandatory courses, but you don't think he's "worthy" of the same recognition?

It is just a difference of opinions and I respect your opinion. Maybe the HS I went to factors into the way I think. Your friend is definitely deserving but there are not too many people like that IMO.

But then again, why even have a difference between Math 30 and Math 33. I am sure there are people like you have described above in both types of classes but a difference in their prestige exists no?

As I said, I respect your opinion but I think we are trying to really spoon feed kids now and don't get me wrong as I am only 3 years removed from graduating. I just think getting a diploma shouldn't be a given.

Keep the celebration down to a reasonable cheer and move along. Theres 500 kids that have to cross that stage and nobody wants to be there. Not one kid will tell you that they've been looking forward to it. The thing already takes 3+ hours, just let the kid cross the stage as quickly as possible and move along because absolutely no one really wants to be there.

I cheered at my dad's convocation. He graduated university with honours while raising 4 kids and keeping a number of part time jobs to keep the family fed. I thought it was worth a cheer.

I don't remember it that way. It's not like the guy is reading names without any time between them. It takes time to cross the stage, you can cheer without stealing the next person's thunder.

My parents cheered when us 3 kids graduated from college or university. By the time we got out diplomas they were done and the next name was called.

It is a shame it has come to the point where cheering is banned. The blame for this however does not lie with the schools, but rather the countless morons that have no consideration for others.

Yeah, it is great showing your support for your kid, but behaving like complete jackasses and drowning out the announcement of the subsequent person to graduate and screwing up their day just makes you look like a twat. That is a situation where no one wins and it is too bad rules need to be brought in to enforce what should just be respectful behaviour.

And thats basically it. If it wasnt getting out of hand we wouldnt be in this situation.

Story 1 with being warned not to cheer or you will be escorted and if you do not cooperate, you will be arrested makes perfect sense. These things will take 10 hours if every parent cheers and there is a delay in between graduates.

Story 2 is very extreme....community service, give me a break. Punishing someone who had nothing to do with the act is even worse.

Grad ceremonies have been going on for ages and it's only now that people are complaining. If it was such a big issue why wasn't cheering and clapping banned years ago?
