If that is what Maher said, I would tend to believe it. However, and maybe I am just off my rocker here, but didn't we hear similar sort of things last year? How the team was "likely" to be moved, and the NHL was just holding off until the Stanley Cup Finals were over?

How in gods name would Peter Maher know the in's and out's of a deal that involves the City of Glendale and Greg Jamison?

Him and Jamison are former drunken frat boys that party until the break of dawn together. They probably still do. GJ leaned into Floyd Maherweather's ear and whispered, 'this fight's over, and poutine's on the plate. Bring on the French ladies!'
That's how he rolls.

Maker is certainly an insider for an NHL team, and as such, has access to talk to team management, etc, that the public doesn't get. The team management would likely know what's going on at NHL management.
Of course, he doesn't know everything, and very well could be wrong in what he said today. I don't suspect that just because Maher is around the team, that they tell him everything, however.
Peter says what he hears, without researching things further, whereas some others might stop to research first. You get a really raw take when Peter talks about things.

For some things yes, but I don't know how much anyone outside of very senior level NHL management would know on something like this.
There has been so much misinformation out there regarding this situation from day one that I'm pretty hesitant to believe any anonymous source type of report.

Yes, and it also means that whatever information that Maher had was third hand, and perhaps outdated. But also, since the Coyotes are NHL owned, and thus owned in part by the Flames' owners, the senior level management would have to keep in contact with the Flames' ownership.
I certainly wouldn't say that Maher is 100% correct, but usually would have some bits of truth in what he says in situations like this one.
If the dealine hasn't passed, it will pass very soon. If no owner steps up this offseason, the team is done in Phoenix, IMO. The NHL has no desire to continue to own the team.
I've been thinking, what if the NHL has an absolute deadline that is before the end of the playoffs, and must agree to sell the team to Quebec City (or elsewhere) while the Coyotes are still in the playoffs? Also, the possibility that Phoenix wins the Stanley Cup and then opens up the next season in a different city. Would Quebec City raise a Phoenix Coyotes - Stanley Cup Champions banner?
Of course, purely hypothetical.

Brunt said much the same thing in Feb., nothing has changed lately.
Quote:
Nor is it in the NHL's interest to suggest in any way that Quebec is their only logical alternative. Remember that this is different than the Atlanta situation -- the league owns the Coyotes -- and so rather than simply skimming a "relocation fee" off the top, while forcing the vendor to take a painful haircut, they need to create the illusion of an active market to maximize the selling price. So expect to hear plenty about phantom bidders in Arizona, and about other prospective suitors (Seattle most prominent among them -- and the interest there may to some degree be real.)

That's not necessarily true at all. The NHL doesn't operate in a fashion where every owner is required to be kept in the loop on every detail as they happen, even for bigger issues. Parties are assigned responsibility for handling certain aspects of operation, they operate within prescribed parameters and don't need to report everything to every constituent. It would be impossible to operate a franchise based corporation in that manner. That's not to say they wouldn't get answers if they asked, but there's not necessarily any sort of reporting requirement.
As to the deadline issue, I don't see that being a possibility. The NHL isn't going to self impose a deadline that sees them forced to act during the playoffs, and a Quebec City group seems unlikely to want to kill off a chance to get themselves a team over an arbitrary drop dead date.

I wouldn't expect the league/Bettman to be keeping the 29 owners informed of day to day happenings with the Coyotes, but if an internal deadline has passed and the league has made a decision that it wants to go forward with a sale and relocation plan, then that is something I very much expect would be shared with the board of governors.
So yes, it is possible that Maher got the info from someone inside high management. However, it would be a third-hand report at best, so one must take it with a grain of salt.

Goldwater is back:
http://www.bizjournals.com/mobile/ph...-ready-to.html
Goldwater’s scrutiny of a new Coyotes sale will likely center around what kind of arena management fee the city might pay a Jamison group or another owner and whether some portion of a sale is aimed at helping a new owner absorb some of the hockey teams’s $20 million in annual losses.
“A subsidy is a subsidy,” said Sitren.

Glendale councilman seeks support for stand vs. Phoenix Coyotes deal
http://www.azcentral.com/community/g...otes-deal.html
Glendale City Councilman Phil Lieberman this week urged members of the Glendale Tea Party Patriots to show up en masse at an upcoming council meeting to oppose a pending deal on the Phoenix Coyotes.
"I need all of your help at a council meeting in the very near future," Lieberman told tea party members on Wednesday.
"Jamison wants a large fortune from the city and unbelievably four or more of the council members are willing to give him that money because they are in a mad protection of the arena and Westgate."
The Glendale Tea Party Patriots . . . which became more vocal last year over the city's sports spending, meets at a Denny's restaurant.

So if the Yotes end up back in Quebec, does that mean they'll be looking for a French speaking coach? If so, does that mean Tippet may be available? It'd be awesome if the Flames can somehow snag him. Market the team as a challenge to him. Afterall, coaches are proud guys. Maybe Tippet feels he has the talent to turn the Flames team around.

I don't think the Coyotes go anywhere next season. It seems that the city council has literally gone mad with power and will do anything to protect their investment, no how much money they have to flush down the toilet. It's absolutely insane how much money they're willing to burn to try and protect their asses. What a mess. The council members who are voting in favour of this stuff should be prosecuted and removed from power.

Glendale can't give the NHL or a new owner any more money. They simply do not have it, which is why they are asking for the 20 million back that is currently in escrow.

Well the question is what will cost more money, floating the Coyotes or mothballing the arena. You have to consider other impacts as well, would the Coyotes leaving be a major blow to the retail development around the arena? Is there potential to fill the 41+ dates that would be vacated? Are the costs that are being covered costs the city would carry next year regardless of the Coyotes being there?
There's a lot more to be considered than just the dollars being pledged.

@LisaHalverstadt: #Glendale Deputy City Manager Horatio *****: Potential #Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison agreed city's arena management fee won't exceed $20M.
@LisaHalverstadt: *****: There have been no discussions about #Glendale giving Jamison an upfront payment. #Coyotes
@LisaHalverstadt: Beasley: "Mr. Jamison feels confident that he is going to be able to take (a deal) to conclusion." #Coyotes
@LisaHalverstadt: Beasley: #Glendale's top negotiator, says Jamison has verbally agreed first-year arena management fee could be adjusted to $17M.
