Default Organic Led (OLED)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED

So OLED TV's will likely be hitting stores this year, and the very latest next year. OLED is something a buddy of mine who's a massive nerd was going on and on about a few years ago. Basically it's a huge step forward from LCD/LED in terms of quality, but in terms of what's really exciting is how thin it is and the fact that it's flexible. As in you can roll it up. For instance:

this is the kind of thing can be the 1st stages to not using paper anymore, and be as impacting on daily life and TV and the radio were. At least that's what I would think looking at that stuff.

The first TV's will be incredibly expensive, this news article says as much as 10,000 pounds!

Either way this looks really exciting.

Yeah, I learned about this technology a few years ago too.

The reason why it's so thin and flexible is each cell creates it's own light source within the cell - no more backlighting!

There have been a few commercial products available for several years now, like the super expensive Optimus products from Russia.

Can't wait until the TVs come down in price years from now.

I have also known about this tech for a while. Definitely more than a couple of years.

That's about what a 42" glasses-free 3DTV cost before they were discontinued. Bring back the WOWvx!

Which is crap because it drives up power consumption, especially for white backed images (like most computer/document displays), and they have limited lifespan.

The blue pixels have a lower lifespan than the other colours, which means the displays are fundemantally less reliable AND the colour balance shifts as the panel ages AND they get dimmer faster than LED backlighting.

Here's a shot of what OLED pixels look like as it decays:

No thanks, not yet, anyways.

They also have bad burn in, worse then plasma. Life span is also super low...I want a TV to last years... not months...

I'm reasonably certain OLED TVs have been in stores for 3 or 4 years, just in a less-than-practical form.

At OLED's current pace, 4K TVs could beat it to the mainstream and nobody will care about OLED again.

The Sony store has had one in the window a few different times I've looked. There has been issues being able to get the screens large enough for TVs, but in smaller scale OLED has been used in phones, media players and cameras for a long time. Any time you see AMOLED it is Active Matrix OLED.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMOLED#Uses

So the tech has been around for a while and is fairly widespread use, but longevity and screen sizes have held it back from becoming more well known.
