They are 2 points back of TC with Bartschi having missed more than 25% of their games. TC has been healthy all year with all their big guns and they still can't pull away from Portland. If he is back there they are likely the favorites over very other team. Sure their GA isn't great but it isn't nearly as bad as suggested.
TC was far from healthy during the year, concussions have taken many game from many of our players. Maybe not the hundred point guys, but our captain missed a good majority out with injury along with many key players. In fact they called up a few younger kids from midgets to fill holes during that time. Should be a fun race. The reason I don't think they make the finals is having to get through Kamloops before taking on TC. It will be a grind. Portland is much better with Bartschi, but there struggle is in net.
Either way keeping him up here for the final 10 games of the season seems pretty silly when looking at the benefit he has from going back both as a player and person.
Correct me if I am wrong, but even if they do try to keep him for the remainder of the season, doesn't he still have to go back as soon as another injured player returns anyway?
Going by my very cursory knowledge of emergency call up rules...because no players are coming back from injury Sven will still be in the line up tonight, correct?

You are correct. However, with the injury rates this team has, there's no guarantee that players will come back faster than we are losing them.

Good point. Assuming that happens, do we think its worthwhile to keep Sven even after the 9 game threshold (and thus burning a year on his contract), only to lose him after when we eventually get enough guys back?
Or do we send him back after 9 regardless, and replace him with a spare D-man or a plug from Abbotsford?

Again, we have NO OPTION to keep him after his 9th game. He cannot stay even if we wanted him to, because the Flames are already at 50 contracts.

not sure if this has been touched on, but wondering IF the Flames make the playoffs, can the Flames recall Sven and not worry about burning year 1 of his ELC, or about contract numbers?

It has been said a few times, no. Playoff games are games and we have 50 contacts already. We cannot trade a contract after the deadline, so Sven will be sent down when the next injured forward gets back barring another injury. Svend of svtory.

It wouldn't be worth it anyway. It is just flat out horrible asset management to burn a year of his contract for what could be as little as four games. And that assumes that the Flames end up stuck in an emergency situation from now until their season ends - be it regular season or some point in the playoffs.
Location: F*** me. We're so f***ing good, you check the f***ing standings? Lets f***ing go! F***ing practice!

Exactly, there is no way the Flames should keep him up to burn a year of his contract since next year when he scores 50 goals, and 100 pts as a rookie we will certainly want him on his ELC for as long as possible.

Oilers suck.
The Flames CANNOT keep him up longer than 9 games, in the regular season / playoffs combined, no matter what, due to already having 50 contracts
The Flames MUST send him back to junior as soon as one more forward returns from injury, due to emergency callup rules.
The Flames would be completely stupid to keep him up for more then 9 games at this point anyway, because you would waste a year of his ELC, for what could be a few games at the end of the season.
Most Importantly, if Sven plays a max of 5 games now in the regular season, he can join the Flames after winning the Memorial Cup and help the Flames sweep the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals.
