I'm going to disagree with your stats....The 1.62 per 100,000 is based on a time period (a year) with a population. The 1 per 400,000 was based on the same time period (a year) with a population. I don't believe you should have tried to adjust for the amount of time stayed in Mexico, as you didn't adjust for the amount of time people were not in Canada.

Edit: Which is it? 1 or none? And, the first stat is about Canadians specifically, while the second stat is about tourists in general. I'm confused.

I think everyone is looking at this from the point of view of probability of something crappy happening in Mexico as opposed to any other vacation destination (or domestically). The fact is, IF something DOES happen, Mexico is the last place you want to be. Having to deal with an accident/trauma in a place with a system as backwards as Mexico is awful.

Sure it does, because fewer Canadians visit Costa Rica a single death has a greater impact on the statistics.

The fact that Mexico and DR are comparable doesn't surprise me at all. There have been a number of mentions in this thread of choosing the DR over Mexico for safety reasons, which is just perplexing.

I can think of many places much worse than Mexico, and while that doesn't improve Mexico's reputation I think people are going a bit overboard here.

Ok, I understand what you are saying but....Is it really that hard to go to the Calgary Herald site and read the story, it is probably the same amount of clicks to come here and search for a link. I don't know if I would rely on a message board for all of my up to date information if a topic was so important to me.

It may be a little off topic but I do think that the conversation going on is valid and relates to the Nabb story.

Same. In fact, the best time I had in Mexico was when I rented a beachouse off resort. Not once did I ever feel scared.

When I was in DR, I found people to be a lot more pushy. I had one guy who worked at the resort keep asking if he could have my sunglasses to the point that I started to feel bullied and I just gave them to him to shut him up. My wife and I also had to deal with a group of rowdy teenagers making lewd remarks at her when we were off resort. Of the 4 times I have been to Mexico, I never dealt with such rudeness from the locals.
