So now our irrational fear should be of tourists in their twenties? I think that basically leaves us with cruise ships as the only safe vacation.
Too soon?

Dont you usually have to tell a joke before you ask if it's "too soon"?

1.6 million Canadians visited Mexico last year, 6 were killed.
Yes, we should panic.

Well, you do have a better chance of being killed in Mexico than you do of winning the lotto, assuming of course that you partake of both.

You have a better chance of being killed any time than you do winning the lottery. Everyone dies, but not everyone wins the lottery in their life time.

You are 2.7 times more likely to be murdered in Costa Rica.

What is the rate of murder in Canada?

It's early so pardon any screwed up (very) rough math.
1.62 per 100,000 or 1 per 62,000 on a year basis being a resident.
Taking the 1 per 400,000 in Mexico as mentioned above and assuming a week per tourist (rough average holiday estimate) that's 1 per 7,700 on a year basis.
Bolded only for comparison highlighting only - this is VERY rough and probably bad usage of stats.

Apparently, groping of women by complete strangers on "crowded" trains is a big issue.

I'm going to disagree with your stats....The 1.62 per 100,000 is based on a time period (a year) with a population. The 1 per 400,000 was based on the same time period (a year) with a population. I don't believe you should have tried to adjust for the amount of time stayed in Mexico, as you didn't adjust for the amount of time people were not in Canada.

That post makes no sense.
Edit: Which is it? 1 or none? And, the first stat is about Canadians specifically, while the second stat is about tourists in general. I'm confused.

This thread is so far off topic it is hard to read for actual updates on Nabb. 1 out 10 posts is about the thread topic, the rest are opinionated pissing matches and math debates from everyone else. Start another thread titled Is it safe to travel to Mexico. Start a poll and take your business over there.
Thanks to the few that are actually posting about Nabb.

I think everyone is looking at this from the point of view of probability of something crappy happening in Mexico as opposed to any other vacation destination (or domestically). The fact is, IF something DOES happen, Mexico is the last place you want to be. Having to deal with an accident/trauma in a place with a system as backwards as Mexico is awful.

Sure it does, because fewer Canadians visit Costa Rica a single death has a greater impact on the statistics.
The fact that Mexico and DR are comparable doesn't surprise me at all. There have been a number of mentions in this thread of choosing the DR over Mexico for safety reasons, which is just perplexing.

I can think of many places much worse than Mexico, and while that doesn't improve Mexico's reputation I think people are going a bit overboard here.

Ok, I understand what you are saying but....Is it really that hard to go to the Calgary Herald site and read the story, it is probably the same amount of clicks to come here and search for a link. I don't know if I would rely on a message board for all of my up to date information if a topic was so important to me.
It may be a little off topic but I do think that the conversation going on is valid and relates to the Nabb story.

Same. In fact, the best time I had in Mexico was when I rented a beachouse off resort. Not once did I ever feel scared.
When I was in DR, I found people to be a lot more pushy. I had one guy who worked at the resort keep asking if he could have my sunglasses to the point that I started to feel bullied and I just gave them to him to shut him up. My wife and I also had to deal with a group of rowdy teenagers making lewd remarks at her when we were off resort. Of the 4 times I have been to Mexico, I never dealt with such rudeness from the locals.
