I get it that you want people hitting your blog but making money off CP members knowing they are getting scammed isn't cool at all.
|
The Qualico deal should be removed as well as any others that people from CP have had issues with. No more deal-scams for me...

I don't fault DealTicker in offering the deal. It is similar to others I have bought and used. However, the refund process does not appear to be easy.

DealTicker flat out refused to refund me for the JR contracting spring landscaping deal, after they had no showed me 7 times. Conveniently, the only appointments available initially were after the refund window had closed, which they then never showed for...
DealTicker is a step below the other sites, IMO. Dealfind got me a refund in a similar situation, but it took time/multiple emails.
I've learned my lesson about these individual service provider type deals, and wonder whether it's still appropriate for them to be promoted on CP. The original reason the mods allowed this (commercial) thread was to help the members, but many of these cleaning/landscaping type deals are one step up from scams, which doesn't really help the member, imo.

Given my current experience trying to get a refund and the fact that I can say with certainty that I am now getting a fair amount of spam to an email address that was ONLY ever given to DealTicker, I agree that they are at least one step below the other sites. I will give them a little more time, but my next step will be to contact my credit card company. If it does go that far, I will never deal with them again. Even if I lose my money, overall I am quite a bit ahead on the deals.
I too avoid any service deals. However, I do appreciate this thread and hope that it does not get shut down. I like that the OP highlights the deals that I might want to look at. I just do my own due diligence to decide if I do want to proceed and am fairly picky. I also appreciate the discussion from other unbiased posters. I don't find the "HOT DEAL" and "VERY HOT DEAL" tags at all informative, so I just ignore that. If anything, the inclusion of those tags appear to be based solely on the higher percentage discount of the "deals" and are more of an indicator that it is bordering on a scam. (i.e. it is too good to be true)

For sure, my main points were
1) DealTicker is sketchball
2) Service type deals are not worth the risk
I'm not saying to shut down the thread, but it'd be nice if the OP attached a bit of extra vetting. I won't be buying any of the sketchy deals again, but it'd be nice if other CPers didn't have to learn the hard way.
I've definitely appreciated the thread, and have had some great meals at places that I wouldn't have otherwise tried because of it. Definitely restaurants seem like the best combination of value/legitimacy, IMO.

Without question, we agree on #1. We agree on #2 depending on what is included in the definition of "service type deals". Some of the gym membership/yoga ones could be okay depending on the conditions, but they are definitely not as "HOT" as they claim to be.

To me, it depends. I would rather get a few extra borderline ones to filter out on my own than miss out some good ones that didn't meet someone else's criteria.

Except restaurants do go out of business, which is what happened to the deal where I am trying to get a refund. I've also been reasonably pleased with the ones where you get something in the mail. Subscription to magazines and buckyballs were great. I was okay with the smartphone gloves that came out about a month ago, but the quality isn't that great. Other non-restaurant retail food stores have been good too (butcher shops & Naked Leaf tea).

You can't fault the OP for posting deals that may or may not be good. He is merely an advertiser for the daily deal sites. He earns a profit based on people buying vouchers through his website. Basically the daily deal sites like Dealfind, Dealticker, etc. give him a small cut of the profit if people buy their vouchers via his blog. It's not his responsibility to determine whether any deals are shady or not. That's the responsibility of the daily deal sites themselves.

I would typically agree with you except in this situation other posters have said that one deal was a scam. Then the very next day GFG posts the same scam again.
Like wtf is with that? I think it's his responsibility to at least exclude that deal knowing it's a scam based on others posts in the thread. Especially considering the mods are allowing him to advertise on cp for free. Am I out to lunch here or do others agree with me?

For the record if anyone is interested in my refund from DealTicker. I finally heard back from them and the email said, "We will do our absolute best to process your refund in a prompt and efficient manner." That was followed with the comment that the refund will be processed on January 19. It's pretty sad that it takes them a full month to process a refund. Anyway, I am just happy that the money will be refunded.

The latest Qualico deal was featured on TeamBuy. TeamBuy is one of the main daily deals sites that I follow. As soon as I saw the deal, I forwarded this thread to my primary contact at TeamBuy. They responded back to me and said their investigating the issue and that they do the best due diligence as they can on every company that they feature. When deal go bad, the daily deals site offering the company will provide you with a refund.
Moving forward, I will no longer post any more deals from Qualico on my blog.

I'm doing the best that I can. I'm only a blogger and post deals that I like on my blog.
I love cleaning deals and bought a bunch of them when I first started seeing them, but had to refund a couple of them after they never showed up or went out of business. Because of this bad experience, I was hesitant to post cleaning deals for a while and told all the contacts that I have to be very careful with cleaning deals. All the daily deals sites assured me that they'll be extra careful and will do their due diligence on all cleaning companies moving forward.
Once I felt the issues were resolved, I started promoting cleaning deals again and purchased a couple maid and carpet cleaning deals and had no problems whatsoever nor did I hear any complaints from my readers.
In regards to the Qualico deal, ruddstud was the only person that I heard complaints about Qualico. With over 20,000 subscribers, whenever a deal goes bad, I get a lot of emails from my readers telling me about it. I didn't hear any complaint from anyone else. I didn't want to "exclude/ ban" a company from my blog without more evidence. Now that it's more clear, I will no longer feature any more deals from Qualico on my blog.

Isn't that kinda like turning the other cheek when someone is being bullied on the schoolyard? Are you the same person who walks away and says, "it doesn't affect me, i'm not getting involved?"

That wasn't my experience with DealTicker and the JR contracting deal. They flat out refused on the grounds that it was past the refund timeframe (30 days iirc). They said to call JR contracting and ask them for a refund. I would of if I could have gotten ahold of them.

Which is outside the normal T&Cs of Calgary Puck. But he got special permission to have this thread, on the grounds that it would be helping the members of CP save money. That's a bit of a higher standard than his own blog, where he can put whatever he likes in whatever capacity he wants.

For those who missed it the first time around, apparently EB Games is going to offer the 4GB Xbox and Kinect combo for 199 on boxing day.
No other stores appear to be matching....yet?

Just spoke with Dealfind and heres their response:
- If you call for a refund after 30 days, they will now issue a Dealfind coupon good for any service with them! What a load of crap! This means that any service company can book you in and not show and keep your money! If you book them 2 weeks down the road and don't show, you have to book again. If they no show again and its after 30 days, you are not going to get a refund! These GREAT DEAL sites are a scam and I suggest that the moderators look into this before we all get taken by these "amazing deals" offered here! These fly by night companies are doing 500-1000 deals per day. They take booking for the first 30 days and then dont care about anyone after the 30 days because they dont have to perform their duties! BEWARE its a scam....

I have purchased 12 of the "deals" and I have not been "screwed" by any of them.
I have only purchased from what I can tell are legitimate companies. I am picking up a Cookies by George "deal" this evening.
It always should be buyer beware. Any only local company people need to be wary of purchasing from them.

I know for sure that a couple other stores are doing it....for some reason I can only remember The Source, but EB Games definitely aren't the only ones.
