Ya, first off the papers and "experts" are probably the worst thing to read right now for someone who knew the parties involved. I went through this with my friend too.

With my previous post, that is what I was getting at. I was not looking for sympathy for the killer, he needs to live with what he did. However, I was just saying that everyone else is a victim here, even the friends and family of the killer.

Look at the mental hardship they are going through with idiot know-it-alls going on TV and saying they were the ones who failed him. The papers are trying to get reactions out of friends, so they can hit print and make the close friends/family look like morons. All to sell papers.

So to everyone out there, go ahead and hate this guy, I totally understand. You will get no argument from me. Just remember that everyone else involved is hurting in some way.

Once again, I suspect that is the media not having their facts right. They were likely planning to be at the airport for 5:00. Looking at YYC's website the first flights of the morning are at 6:00; and nothing going east until closer to 7:00.

Why does the precise timeline of a Calgary Herald story matter?

What a waste of life.

How can someone can be so gutless and evil. His name should not even be published as he deserves no remembrance.

I did read that all 3 guns were registered. You can own a handgun in Canada if you belong to a gun club...

No he doesn't, he committed suicide after slaying 3 almost 4 people.

This was madness. A crime of passion.

In no way do I excuse the crime, but I have been thinking about our culture, and how our idea of romantic love is sometimes an ugly possessive thing. We are taught that we have a "soul-mate", that love is "forever".

Oddly, one of our most popular love songs is "Every Breath You Take", which is really about creepy obsession. Our movies, novels, and popular music are full of these kinds of messages.

Many women (and some men) can't have a public profile on facebook, or their name in the white pages, because they are harassed by stalkers.

Can't we teach our children that love is not jealous? That love affairs end, and it is not the end of the world. That there are "plenty of fish in the sea". Sting also wrote "if you love someone, set them free". That's the better message.

MrMastadonFarm has never told a joke on CP, so one can only assume that he's being serious. I for one, hope for quick justice from our mods.

I think that "Crime of Passion" might be the wrong term for this, whenever I hear Crime of Passion, I think Romeo and Juliet. Something unfortunate, unplanned and spontaneous.

This kid had lots of time to talk himself out of this, and he also took a bunch of people our with them.

Its the time that he had before he made the kill where he was literally hunting them.

From everything I heard this kid was a control freak in the relationship, he was the typical creep that puts on the phony lovey dovey front facing great guy look, while he imposes his will on the girl in the background.

He was a monster, not a jilted lover, he lost control of her, but he didn't lose control of himself.

Crime of obsession would be more like it, he was a jilted stalker.

In another case a few years ago in northern Alberta, with a man killing his ex, he described himself as feeling a great sense of relief after it was done, that he'd taken care of a lingering, recurring problem and that he was back in control again.

I remember a pyschologist at the time saying that was not an unusual reaction in that situation.

At risk of derailling this thread:

One thing that has to stop is that motif in films, television, books, et al that 'persistance pays off.' A lot of love stories in movies actually celebrate male protagonists that incesstantly berate and annoy the objects of their affection until the female experiences a moment of capitulation after a grand gesture put on by the male protagonist whereby they end up together forever happily. This gives young males the idea that this kind of behavior is not only tolerated but actually welcomed when in reality it conditions them towards behavior that can turn them into a stalker and/or predator.

Is (multiple) murder/suicide the most selfish act a person can commit? For the perpetrator, the outcome is exactly the same if you just off yourself and leave everyone else alone. In a premeditated act like this I don't understand the motivation.

I wasn't actually thinking of any movie in particular. A good chunk of movies aimed at young people have that formula right in the script.

Among it's many, many faults, this is one of my concerns about the Twilight books/movies. I've read critiques that state the main vampire dude breaks into the girl's bedroom at night and watches her sleep. The author doesn't portray this behaviour as being the actions of a sick degenerate voyeur but rather that of a romantic. So now we're going to get a generation of young teenage girls who read in their favourite novel that being stalked is endearing and a bunch of creepy teenage boys who think they're only giving the girls what they want.
