I don't have a tablet yet, but I am heading to the US on vacation next week and was going to pick up a Kindle Fire, but if it won't "work" (as in using the Amazon ecosystem) in Canada, is there any point?

EDIT: Can you even access the Amazon AppStore on in from Canada?

You can use an US billing address, apparently.

She has a ton of epub books that she has got for her iPod, so I am assuming she would want to use them on her Kindle, but Kindle doesn't support ePub without converting, with something like Calibre, correct?

She also gets stuff from the library, which Amazon claims is possible, but only with "Kindle Books" - which implies they need to be .amz format, right?

Is there another reader that should be considered instead? I want to keep it under $100 if possible, unless there is a really good reason.
I have the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch. It uses the epub format. I'm enjoying it so far, but the side buttons to turn the page are a bit stiff, but at least it has page-turn buttons unlike the Kindle Touch. Not sure if you can get one shipped to Canada though as I picked it up while in the States. It's right at the $100 USD price.

I did some searching on the Touch, which isn't available in Canada btw, and every post seems to indicate that you can. Nothing for certain though, because I can't find an official word.

A customer claim
Quote:
I just had a discussion with one of Kindle's online reps, and he assured me that all of the features of the Kindle Touch will work in Canada, including the "Cloud" backup function.
This thread seems to have many claims that you can use it, but one post says they read you might have problems with the content side of it.

Of all of them, this post seems the most informative.

Quote:
So far, I have not been able to fool Google or Amazon into thinking I'm US resident even though I have US VPN, US address and US credit card. I'm now thinking about using VPN router. However, I can access Amazon Cloud Services. I can upload music from my PC or my iTunes into the Cloud and then play them using the Cloud Player on my Tablet. Of course, with the Kindle app, I can download or archive any of my kindle books.

However, I can not buy anything at the Amazon MP3 store or even install any of their apps even if they are available for me at the Market. The Appstore tells me it's not available for my region and the MP3 store says it is only available for Americans in the US.
So bottom line, IMHO, is a Kindle Touch or Keyboard would be fine, but as soon as you require apps, which a Fire would obviously, you would be SOL w/o some sort of jailbreak.

Have you considered the Kobo touch? It's dropped to $99 recently and supports ePub and PDF.

Pretty much identical to the Nook.

That seems like it would work just as well, without the hassle of dealing with Amazon. Can you sideload books onto it though? I know the Kobo app in my Playbook won't let me.

That has been denied.

Most sites are now saying Dec.19th, but some sources have info that online places will start filling orders on the 12.

I really do hope that week of the 12th is correct.

As long as the eBook is in a supported format (ePub or PDF), and from an open platform provider, you will be able to download or transfer the eBook onto your Kobo eReader.

RIM loses half a billion dollars last quarter on the Playbook:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/tech...inventory.html

I'm pretty sure this isn't an actual dollars out the door figure - it's just enormous amounts of unsold inventory for which there has been no return on investment. Still, selling only 150k units is not good..those are Motorola numbers

Memory Express just called me regarding the Transformer Prime. Apparently Asus is only releasing the 32gb model for now. Sounds like the 64gb model might not be out until the new year. I think I'll go with the 32 in that case. It's $100 cheaper, and with it being able to support MicroSD and with 8 gb of storage on a cloud server, I think it should be just fine.

Dec 22, and sold out at best buy according to the link below. I was at memory express.com and they are still allowing pre-orders.

I have a Kindle touch 3G in Calgary. Everything works great. But, I think many of the nice features on the Kindle Fire require an amazon prime membership, which you can't get up here very easily.

Kindle ebooks don't work in Canadian libraries per Calgary Public ebook compatibility site http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/

The lack of a microSD in the Kindle is going to keep me from buying it.

Love the price, but 8GB is not even close to be enough space.

All Amazon content doesnt' go against your 5 GB of free space in the cloud nor the 7ish on the Fire itself.

Put all my Jack Johnson and Glenn Gould albums in the cloud and accessed everything seamlessly and streamed it via the cloud player.

I couldn't watch the dvds I put on the cloud which means unless they are Amazon purchased videos, you will need to use the Fire's storage via a usb cable to upload your videos.

One work around is google video which is, shall we say, a grey area. Movies there streamed perfectly via the browser.
