I went to school with a large number of natives, and they were overwhelmingly more racist than any 'white' kid in the school.

Not only that, but they bullied and picked on visible minorities a lot. Made a point of it as well.

This isn't the world of Archie Bunker where you can say "Hey that nip is a pretty nice guy" or "That wop is a hard worker". Words like that in any context are racist and not acceptable.
So when black people refer to one another as n***ers as an endearment, they are actually being racist? Interesting theory.

Regardless of your position on this, I find the weight that we put on certain words fascinating.

Context, damnit! Context! Heck, my gf calls me a chink sometimes, but she says it as a term of endearment, not out of malice or to belittle me. Oh wait... hm... or maybe she is... ahhh... my heart... it is broken.

What are we talking about again?

Hockeyguy15 says that context doesn't matter. I think that is more of a case of racial hyper-sensitivity than anything else. Ah well, to each their own I guess...

What a weak argument. There is really no point in continuing on with you is there?

I guess all the black people that are offended by other black people calling them the n word mean nothing to you.

If you are back your argument on what you hear rappers and drug dealers spouting off about then there is no point in talking at you any further. None of the black people I know call their black friends that.

Yep I am hypersensitive because I don't think people should be called racial slurrs in any context.

Boy am I a jackass.

To be fair I have a number of black friends that use that word as if they were saying 'what's up man?' and I hear it dozens of times daily in that context. Context definitely matters.

I think since black people claim the N word is their word. The white folks should claim "gwailo" as their word. That way the chinese can't use that against you anymore.

Imagine how cool it would sound..."What's up my Gwai-lo!"

The woman in that video is surely a racist, but I think too often these days people confuse racially insensitive comments with being racist. I've been called a "wop" before, but no one has ever tried to infringe on my rights because of my heritage. Therefore, I have never had to endure racism. Complaining about some kids calling you "nip" when you were younger is no different than being picked on for being fat, ugly, etc. By no means does that make it right, but let's try to keep things in the proper perspective.
Calling someone fat is racist to Americans.

I remember back in the 80's in a small praire town and we played against another basketball team from the big city of Brandon. They had an East Indian kid on their team who wore a turban. Our crowd was chanting "cover the guy with the hat!" over and over. Both parents, teachers and kids all did it, never thought anything at the time just thought it was funny. Different world indeed. I could just imagine what the kid felt like.

I think this has been a good discusion about racism. A lot of good points were brought up that hopefully made us sit back for a minute and think about how our words may hurt other people. I like to think that I have become a better person from what I have learned from this thread. But I think all of us can put aside our differences and ask the real question here.... And that is... Who let that trailer trash loud mouth b#tch out of the kitchen?

Well anyone with any familiarity of the breed can tell you her sterling example of the superiority of the white race is at home (some council estate crap hole) lying on the coach in his fake burberry boxers sipping his 5th can of Tennents watching the telly while awaiting his giro.

And as she's english if she has any knowledge of where the kitchen is at all it is only because she uses the sink to throw up in occasionally.

No kidding. I guess the kid's older sister is tending to the crack cooking on the stove.

Words are not racist. People are.

I don't see how it is weak at all, actually. Words are not racist. Words can be used to convey racism, but on their own, they are just words.

To me, it means that they are offended by a word that they feel is being used inappropriately. Nothing more, nothing less.
