Default PS3 Issue or TV Issue?

I know I can probably troubleshoot this with the internet but I thought it might be easier (for me) if I asked the Tech forum. I have my PS3 hooked up to my Sharp Aquos LED, 1080p, 120Hz with HDMI cable. So far so good. On the Sharps, there is a little box in the upper corner that says what the video output that the TV is recognizing. When it I turn the PS3 on, it recognizes that the PS3 is 1080p, however when I turn a game on it goes to 720p. What gives? My PS3 is setup for all different outputs. Does this mean that games are in 720p? Just not sure if I'm missing out on something.

I know most games, if not all, are 720p. Although the flipping back and forth with the TV, that I don't know.

I know, not the best contribution, but check the back of the boxes on your games and it should tell you whether it's 720p or 1080p. And see if it's only certain games that do it.

Sometimes you can force it to 1080 by unchecking the other resolutions in your PS3 settings menu.

Thanks guys, just trying to get the optimum resolution for Skyrim. From the sounds of it, it is in 1080i and there is not much of a difference between 720p and 1080i. Let me know if that's out to lunch!

No, 1080i is pretty much 1080p. You usually wouldn't get that unless you were running component cables. Most consoles are running 720p or even lower (Battlefield 3) because they want to keep a good average framerate.

Pop in a Blu Ray and it'll be 1080p.

This always bugged me about the PS3. All that power and most of the games only run at 720p. At least upscale them. I have both the X360 and the PS3.

One problem is that the Cell CPU is such a different architecture from the Xbox and often so much more difficult to program for that developers will often develop games on the Xbox and then port them onto the PS3. Consequentely, many games (Ghostbusters, Mafia 2, etc.) actually run at lower resolution with fewer features than their Xbox companions. Also, because of the small amount of video memory (256MB), it's difficult to achieve higher resolutions and anti-aliasing at 1080p.

Upscaling has the same effect as zooming in on a blurry photo. It doesn't really add anything to the picture, it's just an artificial way of stretching and magnifying the image and often just adding a sharpen filter.
