From a cursory glance it seems that he decides it is a "reasonable" infringement on their rights, no?

Yup:
Quote:
E. Conclusion on section 1 of the Charter
[124] For the reasons set out above, I conclude that the City has established that the limitations resulting from the enforcement of the Trespass Notice on the applicants’ section 2 freedoms are “reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society”.
|
Because our laws are going to be different (the Tresspass to Property Act is from Ontario I believe) I assume the judgment isn't totally meaningful to us, but if we have a similar law it would seem reasonable to assume a similar conclusion.

Listening to the radio coming home from work (in Ontario), it appears that people at Occupy Toronto are wearing riot gear while waiting for police.
Riot gear? How did they get that?
To me, it definitely shows their motives. Hold out, draw violence...

I seem to recall CP being quite pro Nenshi leading up to his election. I realize this is only one issue, but, it would seem that the CP support Nenshi once had may not be with him anymore, based on various comments. One term mayor? Am I misreading things? Has his approval rating really taken a set back and is it largely due to this issue?

I don't think there is such a thing as a one term Mayor in Calgary.
This is merely a hiccup for him, if at all. It will be long forgotten by 2013.

Nenshi recently got an 86% approval rating among Canadian mayors. . . . He is still riding his high. That will come down though, it always does.

I predict Nenshi will run for Liberal leadership (Fed or Prov) before he ever gets defeated as Mayor.

I don't see that. I guess I could be wrong, but a lot of his issues are really municipal issues. Thats not to say he couldn't pick up the others, it just doesn't seem to be his passion.

Not now perhaps. But he's spent a lot of time in TO and is gem to the CBC.
Give him a couple terms as Mayor; he'll be looking a other options.

Cory crunched the numbers on the "wish list"
$1,608,900.00
Read how he got the total here: http://www.corymorgan.com/?p=655
PS: I didn't check his math.

Perhaps, but he does genuinely dislike party politics. As he's said, he has his dream job - I think it will be a long while before he gets antsy to do something different - assuming Calgarians still want him as Mayor.

I believe Nenshi will head into urban planning when he's done being Mayor. City infrastructure and building 'smart' cities has been his passion for a while now. Moreso than politics itself, even though the two concepts are tied together.

CP isn't a single entity, so it's entirely possible that a lot of "pro Nenshi" people are still so, and the negative sentiment is just those upset with the current situation.
Personally I'm kind of glad a mayor isn't a dictator that can just order the police to do whatever he wants. Whatever Nenshi does I presume council, legal counsel, bylaw offices, and who knows who else are involved in the process.
It'd be nice if the city moved through the things it's decided are necessary to get from here to a usable park quicker for sure, maybe with a court weighing in things will pick up.

I'm pro-Nenshi but I still think that this has very little to do with him. Its not like the bylaws officers are his personal henchmen!

Keep in mind, most of the anti-Nenshi comments in this thread are from the posters that were against him from the day he was elected. They're just very vocal in this thread.
