they are going to want at least 1 host through to the KO stages as well, so you might as well assign Germany and/or France to either Spain or the Dutch at this point, same with Portugal and Croatia

Are you implying there's some shady stuff going on behind closed doors and this won't be a fair and square draw? How dare you!!

Does not make sense that Portugal is ranked ahead of Denmark who qualified over them.

Agreed, the whole system is an absolute joke. I sometimes don't know if the head honchos at UEFA or FIFA for that matter know their right from their left.

Do your own draw. It gets boring after a couple minutes, but without fail, you always find a group of death.

Happens all the time. It's long term rankings which means the big teams remain the big teams even if they screw up one qualifying cycle. (Unless you're France). Rewards consistency.

It also rewards results for teams from years back when certain players were on/off the current squad.

It's a flawed system. It shouldn't be about years past, it should be about the here and now. IMO of course.

It used to go back much further (like 12 years), now it only goes back one tournament which does make some sense to me. For example the defending champs used to get automatic qualification, they don't anymore. They just get put into Pot 1, even if they qualified by the skin of their teeth. There has to be some pedigree, not just the hot team du jour.

I am hoping for Poland, Russia, Greece and the Czechs.

That's my dream draw right there

I am looking forward to Euro 2012 now more than ever. After an opening qualifier loss at home to Lithuania I was thinking we were not gonna make it. What a way to pull through.

Well if it only goes back one tourney, I'll concede. That makes sense. Any more than that, then it gets stupid.

Hoping for Poland, Russia, Sweden, Ireland

I presume it's a straight draw and UEFA isn't going to pull one of those complicated jobs where teams that were in the same qualifying group can't be drawn against each other

yup 4 years, qualifying + two tournaments 2008 counts less

  • 40% of the average ranking points per game earned in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying stage.
  • 40% of the average ranking points per game earned in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying stage and final tournament.
  • 20% of the average ranking points per game earned in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying stage and final tournament.
If it had gone back further I think Portugal might have been in Pot 2. They've qualified for everything since 2000! Semifinals in 2006 and Final in 2004 now wiped off the board.

Yeah, but if it went back further, we're talking about players like Figo, Pauleta, Simao, Deco, Carvalho, Miguel etc. It's a bit much IMO.

It is this competition to be on the starting team that has always made Germany so dominant in friendlies.

Players are not willing to even take a small, inconsequential, friendly lightly because they know if they don't perform they will lose their spot in the squad.
Germany usually don't care too much about friendlies really and only give 100% at tournaments.

Recent friendlies:
Denmark - Germany - 2:2
Sweden - Germany - 0:0
Germany - Italy - 1:1
Germany - Australia - 1:2
Germany - Uruguay - 2:1
Germany - Brazil - 3:2
Germany - Poland - 2:2
Ukraine - Germany - 3:3

The friendly with the Ukraine was a complete test by Low as well

Raphael Honigstein who is the main Germany writer for the Guardian said that 5 minutes before the match started Low completely changed the formation they were used to, a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-2-3-2, because he wanted to test how well the players could adapt with little notice and he wanted options so Germany wouldn't be so easy to prepare for (they have played the 4-2-3-1 for years)

If you had to bet $10,000 of your own money on who would win a game between those two teams, who would you pick?

That should be the test.

Yeah, another one for a broken system here. France and Denmark qualified from the group stages yet Croatia and Portugal who needed a playoff get seeded ahead of them. Thats stupid.

My life as an Estonian football coach ......
Quote:
An Irish football fan scored a goal of his own and set off on a fantasy football adventure when he bluffed his way into the Ireland v Estonia match last Friday without a ticket.

Conor Cunningham, 27, got into the game on Friday night and managed to bag himself a seat next to Estonian manager Tarmo Ruutli.

He then stood up close to Robbie Keane and Keith Andrews as they did TV interviews in the tunnel.

And it was all down to a "borrowed" Estonian tracksuit.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-15770140

Quote:
The ruse finally came undone when an Estonian team official became suspicious as to why someone in an Estonian tracksuit was celebrating so enthusiastically about Ireland's qualification."She came over to me and started talking to me and I just said I had to bring the bag of footballs back," Conor added.
