The fine print on the coupon is:
If the state or province where the merchant is located prohibits earlier termination, then the amount you paid for the voucher will expire five (5) years from the date the voucher is issued. The prepaid portion of the voucher will not expire in states and provinces where it is prohibited by law.
Any idea if they should still honour it? It is strange that they don't have anyone picking up the phone.

Hey red sky,
Ducay and rd_aaron pretty much answered the question for you.
Gift Cards can not expire in Alberta, but vouchers may.
If a voucher expires, the voucher is still worth the original amount that you paid for it.

The law is that your money can never expire in Alberta. If they turn you down on that, I'd contact the vendor (dealfind/dealticker/groupon/whoever), and make a stink with the consumer protection people at the provincial level. I could definitely see someone at the restaurant/merchant turning you down due to a lack of knowledge.

That's only true if the voucher is for a specific thing. For example, a voucher good for 1 manicure could expire. A voucher good for $50 of spa service cannot. Vouchers are specifically included by name in the Gift Card Regulation of Alberta's Fair Trading Act.
All of these companies selling these vouchers say the act doesn't apply to their products, but they're not correct in that.
I've quoted the relevant sections below:
Quote:
Prohibit expiry dates on gift cards, gift certificates, and vouchers that have been
purchased and have monetary value
The regulation also does not apply to promotional cards, loyalty cards, phone cards or cards sold for a specific service. For example, a card that entitles a consumer to a manicure and does not have a specific dollar value is not considered a gift card. If it does not have a cash value, it is not covered by the regulation.

Interesting. So paying $20 for $40 of food at Avocado means that the $40 can't expire? They probably don't realize this if they have an expiry date on it.

Has anyone done any of the auto detailing deals? I'm horribly overdue to get the car cleaned and these deals sound great, but I don't want to wait three months and have a half-hearted job done.

I've bought a couple auto detailing deals and haven't had any issues. I dropped my car off and got it detailed at Calgary Auto Spa yesterday. They did a good job. It took me 2 weeks to book a weekend appointment and I could have got in earlier if I could have dropped my car off during the weekday. If you're concerned about having to wait too long to book an appointment, you can always call the business before you buy the voucher and ask them how long it'll take.

Have the Garbage Guys done this before...what's their reputation for dealing with this type of thing? I don't want to buy it and then be unable to actually book them.

There's been a couple junk removal deals in the past, but this is The Garbage Guys first group buying deal.
I think they are one of the bigger players in the business. I see their logo and trucks everywhere.

Just a suggestion, GFG.. could you put a space break between each deal? The text all kind of blends into a big blob of black underlines (to me anyway)
