Man, I think 96 phone calls is being let off the hook easy.

Just for the record, I once ordered a chestnut cake there once before learning someone at the party was allergic to it. I called about an hour later, they answered and were OK with the cancellation. I didn't get a crazy Japanese man flipping out on me.

Even then I still felt bad cancelling.

What's astonishing is that you think a small bakery, that offers 22 cakes on it's menu, should have some sitting premade ready to go. I'm betting their turnover isn't that high and cakes sitting for a day are not the way to go when you pride yourself over fresh baked tasty goods.

Even more astonishing is you back up your claim that they have some sitting there with a photo showing ONE cake out of 22. LOL... amazing.

Frankly, I don't believe that the OP is used to getting custom cakes in 30 minutes. If he is, they probably had one sitting there ready to be customized or perhaps he didn't get them customized before. In this case, perhaps they were sold out and because of that, a 2 hour window to prep, bake, cool, and decorate is awfully short.

Other bakeries, such as Edelweiss (http://www.edelweissimports.com/bakery-c-265.html) who has the best damn blackforest cake, demand more time all cake orders. These cakes are in high demand, but yet still want 3 days notice prior to delivery.

The Edelweiss was awesome back when it was in Brentwood mall. Then they moved to this cute little european house and started to charge European prices. sooo expensive! hehe

"Cake Deadbeats" would make a fantastic new reality show on Food Network.

This thread should be renamed: "The deadbeat and the overly persistant baker"

What's astonishing? My argument is that bakeries have some number of cakes and goodies available for immediate consumption by a walk-in customer. I didn't say they would have one of every item they make sitting there on standby, and that wasn't the point of my post - whatshispickle stated that such a small bakery like Yamato wouldn't have any cakes, already made and for sale. I think the photo is sufficient proof that Yamato has pre-made items for sale. And where do cake slices come from? Yes, wait for it.. a pre-made cake.

Obviously they will have more slices of cake, than whole cakes for sale. I don't think that needs an explanation, unless you want to be thick about it.

Anyway, this is the only explanation for a cake to be able to be ready in 30 minutes like the OP stated.

I guess you are cake expert? A 9" round cake can be baked in ~20 minutes.

The slices there are for display. The cake on the bottom shelf is in a box, it's obviously not for display and it's probably sitting there waiting to be picked up at the front by a customer that had ordered it earlier and then decided to be a scumbag steve about it.

Cake expert? It's common sense. How are you going to cool that cake in enough time so that it can actually be decorated? Did you notice that it was a mousse cake, i.e. it has a layer of mousse. Have you had mousse before? How wonderful to have some warm runny mousse on a cake.

BTW - not in the box, on the far left, lower shelf of the display case. You know, that round thing in the shape of a cake.

Something doesn't add up here. The changing of the times of the call (dinner to the next day) is a HUGE difference. I don't think the story happened how it did (or at all).

Someone should phone this bakery and give them the URL to this thread. It would be awesome if they showed up here to defend their side of the story. In fact, it would be more than awesome, it would be epic.

Go for it. And if they get pissed off at you for doing that, chances are they won't call you 96 times since it would be long distance.
