I'm siding with the op here. I think businesses have a responsibility to answer their phones or check their vm. Had they done that, this would have been happier for everyone involved. Seems unlikely the cake would have been started, and if it had been, and they told him that, I bet he would have picked it up.

...ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!
Gerald Broflovski:
Damn it! ... He's using the Chewbacca defense!
Cochran:
Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.[2]

I bet he wouldn't have. The guy can't even differentiate between an 8pm call and 9:30am call in his story. He had no intention of going back there under any circumstances.

I don't see how that matters.
I do enjoy the irony that the guy who has time to make 96 calls, didn't have the 30 seconds it would have taken to answer the call that could have likely saved this whole mess.

It reaks of OP not wanting to spend that much money on a custom cake, changed his mind 20 minutes later and went to safeway. He then called Yamato (likely when he was still nearby) instead of going in person to avoid potential conflict or embarassment for cancelling the order. Surely Yamato had some cakes ready to go, similar to what he purchased at Safeway.
The whole thought process there doesn't make sense.

I'm waiting for the next episode where Philly fan tries to return a half dozen used dong bags because they were way to big.

How do you not see how that matters when your comment was "Seems unlikely the cake would have been started, and if it had been, and they told him that, I bet he would have picked it up"?? I don't think he would have.

Something along the lines of:
 MOD CHALLENGE
The OP has 48 hours to supply pictures of him eating a Yamato cake (with proof of the date in the pictures) or he will be banned. However any other forumer may also go and purchase a Yamato cake and take pictures eating it and the OP will be banned (if they beat the OP to the punch).
Start the clock!

I'm done defending myself here, so this'll be my last post in this thread. If you really want to see my call history with 90+ calls, PM me.
-- I was a flake. I don't deny this. Would I have come back if they called me after I left them a voicemail? Yea. And even the next day, if they didn't phone me 80 times. My point is that Yamato has been much more out of line.
-- If the business can't sustain one $30 spoiled cake, to the point where they have to harass potential customers for days on end, then they should invoke a deposit policy. That's their own stupid. I'm sure it happens to pizza places frequently, and any business that acts in a professional manner won't go spamming their callers. By not taking a deposit, they bear the risk that the customer won't return. Period. It was bound to happen some time.
-- They could have checked their phone, voicemail, and called me back in a reasonable time. This could have prevented matters.
-- They are complete fools if they think phoning me 100 times a day will make me want to cooperate with them. At some point, they must realize that their attempts are futile, and they must be wasting their time just to try to spite me. I personally find it laugh out loud funny.
Judge me, vilify me; Call me cheap, loserish; Disapprove, frown, laugh; Whatever. I hope you were at least amused by the story.
And in case you want more ammunition to hate on me:

Years from now, when people ask me, "What was your thread for the Summer of 2011?" I will send them the link here.
This will definitely be on Big Shiny Threads '11 later this year.

Go into a bakery, do they only make items at the time of request? No, they have a few things already made. Otherwise how do you make a cake from scratch in 30 minutes and decorate it?

Notice how it's all individual slices in your photo? When you order a custom cake, do you expect them to mash together a dozen random slices?

I'm guessing the "96" phone calls is their way of telling you don't ever come back.
