I tried to pick one up tonight, but all the Future Shops and Bestbuys were sold out by 8:30pm tonight here. They also took them of the website for be able to order online.
I was thinking that for $99 it would have been a good e-reader. Oh well

Even if you used it just for browsing and email, $99 is a steal.

I got my Touchpad yesterday. It's pretty neat, I linked my facebook account and all my pictures and albums got transferred to the touchpad.
The only thing that sucks is it doesn't seem to play .avi files and itunes DRM movies/tv shows. It can play itunes music files with no problems.

To answer your first question, I figured you were looking for something like 'Dragon Dictation' but it can't do the translation. Another app is SoundNote which records lectures only but allows you to write notes yourself. It then sync's the recording with notes so if you tap a word, it will go to that part of the recorded lecture. You do need to be pretty close to the lecturer for this to be effective.
Note sure if either one of these would help but they are the one's my nieces use in school and they seem fairly happy with them.

I have the Livescribe pen and that seemed to work okay except the pen would act funny sometimes so when you uploaded the notes there would be scribbles all over the digital copy. I can't type fast enough on the iPad's screen keyboard to use it for note taking purposes. I guess I may just have to get the keyboard for it, then I may as well take my laptop to school...

It gets sluggish from times to times. That happened to me the most when I switch from vertical to horizontal view and viceversa.
It also gets like that when you switch views on the Facebook app and in the music app when you switch from song view to albums, etc.
I also suggest you to do a system update as soon as you get it, so you can see files you moved from your PC.

Considering how quickly the Touchpad crashed and burned, I wonder how much this might turn the average joe away from non-ipad tablets going forward.
I'm guessing early adopters feel pretty hosed.

Would also like to know if anybody has been able to find one. Doesn't look like they're in stock anywhere.
Too bad, would have been a nice thing to hold me over until the iPad 3 comes out.

Interesting reading the blogosphere's reaction to HP shuttering the TouchPad and outsourcing their PC business. The major CEOs of PC companies not named Apple or Google seem to be afraid to take on any risk whatsoever and its killing them. They make a product that shows potential and shutter it because of some hiccups instead of challenging engineering/design to deliver.

Editorial: Tablets aren't the third device I'd hoped for
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/21/e...-hoped-for-fr/
Engadget has gone downhill since all the good folks jumped ship, but I really do agree with almost everything in this piece. Until spending hours a day staring at a 4.3" screen destroys my eyesight, at least...

On a separate note, I picked up the Wacom Bamboo Stylus for ipad (for my Transformer) and it is by far the best pen I've used for notetaking. I need to have a stylus for some things, and Wacom has made a beauty of a pen. It's nice, thick, well-balanced and accurate.
