Love food trucks and its great to see Calgary starting to get in on the fun.....sadly I don't think it'll be permanent simply based on our weather. I doubt enough people would go outside to get food anytime its below 0* to keep these trucks busy all year.

That said I hope I'm wrong and I hope the trucks don't charge and arm and a leg

I'm just glad we finally have a progressive mayor!!

I've been thinking and pitching the idea of a Vietnamese food truck for years. Do you guy think that would do well?

I don't know that they have to operate year-round to be profitable and successful. Many businesses are seasonal, yet successful.

Seeing as the ideology at the other end of the spectrum from progressivism is often criticized for being too business friendly, I wouldn't attribute this victory to having a progressive mayor. But definitely some credit to the mayor for doing the right thing in this case.

The problem with Nenshi's opponents was not that they were "too business friendly", but rather that they wanted to keep artificially propping up one business sector at the expense of everyone else (that being suburban development).

I think you can attribute this to progressivism: it's a willingness to experiment, to try things, and to change that made the food truck pilot program possible.

Ha, never thought of it that way. Well then, I hope these trucks are seasonally profitable so that they can attract more trucks to Calgary.

My gut feeling is that the weather could actually be a bit of an advantage for most of these trucks.

A good third of the initial trucks are already tied to more established restaurants (Fiasco, Chracut, and Pimentos). Which means that as long as they provide a nice influx of profit for the half a year they can run, then it'll be good for the owners and might provide more stability for a few trucks.

2) Not having Food Trucks running on every corner 12 months of a year might be a bit benefit. As it won't over saturate the market and keep the novelty fresh. I'm not saying that every truck will benefit from this, but I know if there was a shortened window available each year to enjoy a certain food truck, I'm more likely to head there as opposed to knowing that it'll be there 365. In DC food trucks running 11-12 months of the year, but all of the trucks continuing to evolve or they get stale and customers gravitated to the newest food truck sensation.

It'll be interesting to see where this market goes over the next couple of years. Either way, I'm glad that Food Trucks are in Calgary.

Ah yes, the McRib/Bacon Mushroom Melt/Double Down strategy.

Anyone else hit up the Alley Burger truck downtown tonight? The food was delicious, but the lineup was INSANE! We waited 80 minutes to be served; good to see them find success, but I hope attendance isn't quite so ridiculous next time.

If you caught The Great Food Truck Race on the food network you would have seen the Nom Nom truck win almost every round (the lost the final one - go figure). I'd say it would work easily.

(fyi, i have eaten from their truck in LA and the pork tacos are incredible)

so have the food trucks been given the green light to go? I would imagine the first day would just be crazy down there.

In Ottawa where we have a ton of food trucks (although they're all chip wagons and they only setup in one place) the ones downtown tend to stick around year round but the ones in the suburbs (every Canadian Tire parking lot has one) tend to close for the winter.

The special street use permit for the vendors should be ready to go today, or tomorrow morning.
