That's because matinee means it happens in the afternoon, not cheap movie day.

Chinplex theaters (Crowfoot, Chinook, West Hills etc) have Telus Tuesdays, which is their cheap movie day.

and there was a trailer after the credits, so it's not Canada in general getting shafted
True enough, I have just been reading a lot of "conspiracies" on how RT posts negative reviews up before positive ones. Like with Cap there were a few early negative reviews up on Wednesday, and the overwhelming positive reviews weren't posted until Thursday (while many were wrote prior).

Probably means nothing, but you can't take the word of many review sites because of inconsistent review practices (IGN, Gamestop). RT may join that some day.

Either way if I had to rate the 4 comic movies myself I'd go something like this:
X-Men First Class 8.3/10 (Magneto might be my favorite comic book character on the big screen).
Captain America 7.7/10
Thor 7.6/10
Green Lantern 4.1/10

Now the wait for Cowboys vs. Aliens!

good movie, not quite up to X-men First Class level but still very solid. surprised to see Tony Stark's father play such a big role, i figured from the previews that he was more of a cameo character. should make for a good dynamic between Iron Man and Cap in the Avengers

Weekend Report: 'Captain America' Rockets to the Top, 'Potter's Bubble Bursts
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3221&p=.htm

It was a dollar-spangled debut for Captain America: The First Avenger. Despite being the last to strike, the most famous superhero of Summer 2011's comic-book onslaught delivered the best opening salvo of the bunch, while Harry Potter's last stand fell prey to the adage, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall."

Captain America made an estimated $65.8 million on approximately 7,100 screens at 3,715 locations, edging out fellow Avenger Thor's $65.7 million as well as Green Lantern's $53.2 million and X-Men: First Class's $55.1 million to top the summer's superhero launches. While the gross difference was a sliver, Captain had nine percent greater estimated attendance than Thor, which received more bolstering from 3D (and had IMAX): Captain's 3D share was 40 percent at 2,511 3D locations, compared to Thor's 60 percent at 2,737.

I'm still shocked by the reaction from critics and fans with this movie. I thought for sure I wasn't going to be alone in my review. Hell, the guy I went to the screening with, who I host a movie/tv podcast with didnt like it as well. When I walked out of the theatre, I thought it was going to do well at the box office, but didn't think the reviews would be as positive as they have been.

Maybe I missed something. I don't know. Oh well.

Even thought that's a joke I think there may be some truth.

From what i know of Van's movie taste it may have been too well acted, written etc to qualify as a good movie but couldn't hold up to those standards. He expected a turn off your brain, Michael Bay stupid type movie but it wasn't that either.

When you have Transformers 3 expectations it probably sucked. Special effects wouldn't be as good, too much story, too much good acting. Not enough 'splosions and such.

Then compared to an actual good movie it would suck because it has too little story, too much CGI and the plot is thin.

You guys are just comedians. You know jack about my movie taste but because I like transformers movies(as a guilty pleasure I might add), you think I'm incapable of liking quality.

My three favorite summer movies have been xmen, horrible bosses and Thor. All those had generally positive reviews from critics and fans. So how does your stupid theory apply here?

So I like transformers movies, sue me.

No need to sue you. My kids love the transformers movies as well and honestly I found the first one passable. The 2nd one was bar-none one of the most excruciating theater experiences of my life. I think I would rather watch the Canucks hoist the cup than go through that again. Strange with your bar set so low that a movie universally liked by most such as Captain America doesn't meet your entertainment expectations.

I think it is your vehement defense of the movies (or the city of Vancouver for that matter) that doesn't always sit well with folks, not the fact that you like them.

Hahaha, I set the bar with transformers???? Hahahaha, alright, thats exactly what I did.

Still find it funny that no one has taken my opinions on the three other summer movies I listed above and applied that to the ridiculous notion that I only like bad movies. Instead you feel the need to continue on with the very mature VFF bash festival because you think it bothers me or for some other reasons I cant comprehend.

Like in the riot thread people, just because I quote your post or my posts may have a defensive tone to them, does not mean I care or take offense to what you say. This reputation I built because of my like of transformer movies is quite funny especially considering the number of times I have they are guilty pleasure movies. But let me guess, you have never liked somethig that the masses deemed bad, right?

But isn't that what this place is for? To discuss and debate? If everyone shared the same opinions on things, this place would be boring as sin.

You're so defensive. It's nothing personal. I would make fun of anyone that admitted they liked the Transformer movies.

as we all should. it's like if a friend says that secretly he secretly likes Justin Beiber's music, it simply must be addressed
