There is a damn good reason to protest the 'unmarried, straight white-guy' parade and there is a damn good reason to have a Gay Pride parade.
And OF COURSE their parade is going to be sexual! This is a parade for people who are declared to be different because of who they have sex with! What the hell else are they going to to for their parade?

100% exclusive? Umm no. Pride parades are actually the opposite of that. People from all walks of life are welcome, gay, straight, whatever. Hell, I inadvertently wound up halfway in the NY parade this year trying to get to my studio, nobody cared.
And your signature is idiotic largely because you clearly have no grasp on what a democratic law in the US actually means.

Based on Iceland's pride parade, 90%-ish of the people there were straight and the rest gay.

Last time I checked, they don't force you to do a dude before watching the parade.

This is not how one has a rational debate. Interesting that you are calling others out on that.
And BTW, WTF is a can of NAS. Superstar hip hop artist NAS does not come in a can. He does have a hit single I Can....

A Rob Anders or Jason Kenny type character leading a Gay Pride Parade is a big new story.
A left-leaning mayor participating for the second year in a row smacks of a slow news day.

According to Stats Canada, about 1% of the canadian population is gay. So if 100% of the countries gay population showed up, they still wouldn't even be the majority at their own parade.
In 10 years, everyone's going to be like "hey, remember when pride parades were about gay people."

I went to the gay pride parade in Toronto because my girlfriend at the time really wanted to see it, and to be honest some of the more overt acts of sexuallity even made me uncomfortable, and not in the I'm uncomfortable and need to understand this.
More along the lines of why do you have a naked guy wearing leather straps wearing a dog mask crawling around on all fours at your feet kind of uncomfortable?
I think that there is a group of militant gays who's only goal in life is to kind of keep the stereotype alive of a pervese lifestyle because it allows them to keep fighting.
|
And this is why I tend to go to the mountains when the parade occurs.
We talk about the importance of no one interfering with what goes on in our bedrooms, then they take what goes on in the bedroom and parade it front of people, thus muting the actual important message from good groups that are marching for a purpose.

I get what your saying and an awful lot of it is completely valid. But half of the battle for anything is in the forum of public relations, and to me sometimes the gay pride message of the parade tends to be lost as some of it and some of the participants almost seems to be acting as freakish as possible. There's a difference between fighting to gain acceptance and making a statement.

I agree that there's a great reason to have a gay pride parade, however the question is in my mind, if your going to continually try to gain the acceptance of future and past generation, should you really have elements in these parades that make it so members of these generations not show up. I have no problems bringing my nephews to parades that are fun and bright and have purpose. I'm not bringing them to any public display of naked bondage no matter if its male on male or male on femaile.
I also would like to understand why you would think that a hetero pride parade should be protested? it sounds almost heterophobic.

There's a difference between taking pride in who you have sex with and displaying the most extreme and stereotypical manner of having sex with someone. When you see people running around in naked bondage, or pony wear or naked a$$less chaps all your really doing is feeding a stereotype not defeating the stereo type.

Is it really a stereotype when it's based in reality? Obviously the percentage of the gay population who engage in that particular behavior is inflated, and it that sense stereotypes the entire group, but I don't have a problem with that behavior at the parade when it's people simply being themselves. That's actually what I like about most of the people at pride parades, they're out to just be themselves and be proud to be themselves. I'd say that a large part of the over the top antics come from a desire to take the opportunity to let out a lot of stuff that they are forced to hide on aday to day basis and to do so in a very public way. It's a strange dynamic and can't even begin to fully comprehend, I've never had to hide who I am in any manner simply to live a normal life. There are probably people who use the occassion as a F-U to society, which in some places makes sense, but I think we'll see that group get smaller and smaller as gay rights become somethign that's a given as opposed to an ongoing battle.

I can only base it on what I know and see. For example I'm a healthy heterosexual male, aged 43, who's been in a lot of relationships, and obviously you have to do a lot to keep your sex life fresh.
However, I first and foremost don't see a reason to advertise those particular lets call them fetishes in public. But I would be feeding a stereotype if I did that older men are complete f%%%ing perverts.
TO me just being part of the gay pride parade shows your pride in being who you are. You're willing to stand up in front of the world and say that you're gay, and thats entirely awesome.
Sing, dance, have a party, thats awesome.
However, when you have people walking around naked in fetish wear or what have you, you're going to get that element of society that thinks, that the centuries old stereotype of gay going hand in hand with perversion.
To me personally the Gay Pride Parade is an educational experience that homosexuals have normal healthy relationships just like everyone else, and that they're comfortable in their skin.
A$$less chaps don't do that

I would tend to agree with a lot of this, though I think I understand where a lot of it comes from too.
When you are ridiculed, abused, threatened, attacked, etc. just for being who you are, the natural reaction is to defend it. And the best way to do that is to celebrate it, and to take away that which is used against you.
It's the same thing as black people taking back the word n*gger, or females empowering the word bitch.
If gay people go over the top and celebrate the craziest things that are part of gay culture and empower those things, they can't be used against them. If your ok with crawling downtown in front of people in a dog collar it pretty much takes away all their power over you when it comes to mocking you.
Now, this may have been more important in years past, now that there is more acceptance of gay lifestyle and culture, but it's hard to blame (for lack of a better word cause I know that's not exactly what you meant CC) the group that has had to fight back for their rights, safety, and place in society.

I dunno, I look at the gay pride parade as a way for the gay community to give a big middle finger to all the people who stereotype and make fun of gay people. It's basically a statement saying "You think we're flamboyant and fruity? We'll show you how flamboyant and fruity we can be. And you know what? We dont' give a sh** how you see us."

I certainly hope that isn't the reason. Because are black people no longer offended at being called the n word? If anything, having such a hot button word has escalated racial divisions.
I think all these extreme public displays are doing are distancing those that normally wouldn't have been offended.
