How are they going to deal with all those powerlines at one of the interchanges? There's about 3 that run right in the middle of the road. 61st??

Not sure what intersection you are refering to wrt the power lines.
And 61 avenue is a net new road - right now it ends in a T intersection with 84 Street and heads east in the industrial. It will become a feeder road west into the industrial area that way, but with no access to Stoney.

Relocate them is the likely answer. They did that in the NE, and in Edmonton on Anthony Henday there was about 10 times the amount of utilities to deal with. They'll find a way.
EDIT: Oh you mean between 61st and Peigan, the existing road along the CN Track? Yeah those 138kV lines need to be raised because Stoney will be going over the CN Rail.

Yeah, I drive 84th every so often and have seem some big #######s of powerlines that seem to be almost identical height as the bridge overpass. Was wondering if they were going to make a super high bridge to get over them or somehow put the lines below, but then what would happen if a car fell off the bridge, etc...
It looks like they're doing quite a bit of work, I'm just curious how far along they are.

Powerlines are raised all the time. Closer to my home, I know they raised a bunch of smaller powerlines for the McKnight/Metis/36th St interchange. They moved a whole bunch of underground utilities too.

They would never build a bridge to go over power lines.
It's a hell of a lot cheaper to raise power lines, or burry them, than it is to build a bridge for a 6 lane highway.

Seen the same pillars in the ground for months now. Are they waiting for better weather to really get started on this section?

All kinds of work visible now. They are building up the hills at 17th, and you can see earth being moved at the Stoney ROW all the way down 84th. The Cranston interchange still hasn't raised bridge decks though, as they seem content on just moving earth instead.

With both the new runway and the ring road... I wonder how many earth movers are in the city now.

Haven't read the entire thread, but any word on the HWY 1 / HWY 8 Connector for the RR? Or is construction on that a condition of getting the rest of the SW ring road in?

Hwy1-Hwy8 is part of the SW ring road project. Probably won't start until the rest of it is planned.

They were supposed to submit a report on the final plans for the roadway 2 years ago, but it never happened. I believe, at one point, they were saying that they were going to have it built in 2015, but the website still says "2035."
http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/sthwy8-gp.htm
They can't build the Hwy8-Hwy1 link until the Glenmore-Hwy8 corridor is upgraded. Westbound traffic is already nuts near both Sarcee and 69th street, and the situation gets more grave every day. But I assume they're not likely to do anything with Hwy 8 until they figure out what they're going to do with the Glenmore-Hwy22 portion.

Let me be frank with you Mr. Big Plume. Go #### yourself. The province should just build the ring road through weaselhead and put a massive ####-off fence along where the entrance to the casino is.
Suck my balls Tsuu T'ina.

I've said it before, if you want to vote on exactly the same deal again, do it. The province shouldn't give you any more.
The last deal proposed to them that they voted on, is much superior to any option we have without it.
The options we have without crossing reserve land involve spending more cash, and getting a much less useful road.
The deal for the Tsuu Tina should provide them with enough cash and prime development land to sustain the band forever, to a high standard.

I don't have the problem with this, provided that the offer remains essentially the same. The only thing that I think should be clarified/guaranteed is the land swap terms, which have been mentioned previously as the primary sticking point.
I think that the province owning the land through there is vital because it will prevent any future disagreements/blockades if a long-term lease arrangement was made. The reserve route is the most direct, straightest, and easiest out of all of the options considered because, unfortunately, our city gave away much of the leverage of an in-city route when Lakeview was built.
My personal impression is that the Tsuu T'ina realized that the offer of a lifetime has been presented to them, and with some minor clarifications, can not be passed up on. That being said, if they try and milk more money from the province and/or try to change the scope of the deal dramatically, I think that the province would/should tell them to stuff it. Again.

I don't remember that being cited as the reason they rejected the deal last time...

The original deal with the province that would have seen them give up 400 hectares of land in exchange for $275 million and the possibility of 2,000 hectares on the other side of the reserve.
However, the lack of guarantee on the additional land -the province said it would do its best to procure the land -was one of the sticking points in the vote.
|
So essentially from my point of view this boils down to the fact that the Tsuu T'ina doesn't trust that the province will procure enough land on the other side of the reservation.
So really the only way this deal goes through is if the province basically makes a guarantee on that land and the only way to do that would be to actively go out and buy the land from whoever currently owns it in advance.
Or am I way off base here?
