Maybe it's cheaper to go to Boston? I'm sure it's fairly minor as far as "stupid things government does to waster our money" goes...

Says the guy with a Bruins logo for an avatar...
I don't care that he is going, but to expect that taxpayers should foot the bill for the travel is a waste of money.

Well, to be fair, we don't know for sure that he isn't going to be paying for it. It is a little too much to expect your Prime Minister to fly on a regular flight as he needs the privacy and security that a normal civilian doesn't. For all we know, he is going to personally pay the expenses at some point.... I hope.

He's paying equivalent commercial airfare, and he bought the tickets himself.

What bothers me more is that he will be cheering for Vancouver....just disgraceful.

Really? If Harper talks about "trimming the fat" in his federal budget and then uses even a penny of taxpayers money to attend anything like this, that is hypocrisy at its worst. I voted Conservative this time, but for anyone who supported Harper and has a "meh" attitude towards something like this, call me flabbergasted. I hope he plans to personally pay for everything it costs to get him to Boston and back.

So he's going to end up footing about $500 out of the what, $20,000 cost? $50,000? I have no idea how much it costs to stock a private jet with security personnel and whatever else is required for the day. I'm betting it's not cheap. All on the taxpayer dime.
At least go to Vancouver and pretend you're on government business. What a bum.

Obviously, every Canadian PM feels it is their duty to show up at this event and "fly the flag" because this is perceived as an event that is "important to Canadians". Is that right? I don't know. They all seem to think it's good policy.

Good to know he's paying for his own flight. I hope security details are out of his own pocket too.

Can you post the link?
The Vancouver Sun article I posted earlier said he bought the game tickets himself but didn't mention he was paying for the travel expenses too. Since he's flying on a private government jet, I assumed public funds were being used.
If this is being paid 100% out-of-pocket from Harper's personal finances, then I withdraw my objection. If even a cent of taxpayer money is being used to pay for travel and security expenses so he can attend the Stanley Cup finals, then I have a huge problem with this flagrant waste of public funds and abuse of his office.

I'm the dirtiest commie I know and I don't really have a problem with this. It's a big cultural event and he's the Prime Minister. Obama goes to big American sporting events.
Canadians have decided it's worth the money to protect the Prime Minister and he should be able to travel as he sees fit.

When he was Leader of the Opposition in 2005, Harper criticized the Liberals for flying on Challenger jets for non-government purposes:
Quote:
"As they pad their expense account and look out the windows of their $11,000 per hour Challenger jet flights to B.C., they think that everything is going pretty well," Harper then said. "They just don't get what real life is like for ordinary Canadians."

I'm curious to know what you thought of Nenshi's invitation to speak in Toronto on urban planning which caused such controversy. That was a taxpayer-saving move and he got slammed for it. Harper can spend taxpayer money to go enjoy a hockey game and that's A-Ok?
