I do cardio for 30-45 mins 3 times a week before work. It gets your body burning calories faster for the day, then I come home from work and do another 30 mins of cardio and 30 mins of weights.
It's working for me, but damn is it hard some mornings to roll out of bed at 5am.

Truly amazing stuff, DA! My starting point and goals are similar to yours, so that's some great motivation.

Actually, no. The Wii Fit did crap for me. Sure it was more fun to "run on the spot" with a Mii running around town than just staring at a blank wall... but the amount of calories burned wasn't enough to justify using it. An hour at the pool would burn 500 calories. An hour on the exercise bike would burn 550 calories. An hour on the treadmill would burn 600 calories. An hour on the Wii would burn 300 even if you use the "high intensity" games!! And I found that I barely broke a sweat using the Wii Fit.
Now, when I visited my brother last Christmas, I used the Playstation Move and the game that comes with the bundle. I played the gladiator game in that, and *THAT* really gave me a workout. I was huffing and puffing and dripping sweat. I needed a shower after only 20 minutes of playing.
I had my weight loss support group over to my place to demo the Wii Fit. For the most part, the people in my group don't exercise AT ALL. They thought it was great. And fun. And I think if someone is starting out, it is a fun way to get started. And I started my workouts slow... I was on the exercise bike with no resistance for only 15 minutes, then it was 20 minutes, then I added the hills program for 20 minutes, then 30, then steeper hills... So I'd say the Wii Fit is great for a beginner wanting to have a fun way of getting in a little exercise. It's not so great if you want to burn large numbers of calories in a short period.

One other thing.... a 300 pound person doing 30 minutes of swimming will burn far more calories than a 160 pound person doing 30 minutes of swimming. So if you are at 300 pounds, using something like the Wii or similar low impact exercising would be enough to start losing weight. If you are a 165 pound male trying to get to 160, you are better off taking a Cardio Kickboxing class.

I'm not trying to get to 160. I'm actually struggling to stay around 160. I had that thread last week where over the last two years I was pummeling myself with "Exercise = Good" and "Food = Bad", so I feel guilty about eating a normal diet. Yesterday I was on the stationary bike for an hour, went swimming for an hour, had cardio kickboxing for an hour, and then did a 5K run with the Running Room club, but had only 1700 calories for the day. So I'm still losing weight. Like I said in the other thread, I feel like an alcoholic who's put down the bottle for 2 years fearing having a couple beer with the guys. So many people have lost the weight only to gain it all right back again, and I am super-ultra-paranoid about going back to the before picture.

DA, Buy some beer and kick back and watch some playoff hockey, and order a pizza when you get hungry.

We did a weight loss contest at my work over a three month period, and it ended up being a really good kickstart to a healthier lifestyle for me. I've heard that it's harder for females to lose weight, so I was pretty happy that over the course of the three months I lost 25 pounds, 44% of my body fat, and 40 pounds of fat. I also gained quite a bit of muscle.
When I started the contest, I decided that I wouldn't do anything unrealistic, or that I would not continue after the contest was over. I wanted to make healthy lifestyle changes, not do anything too drastic just for a contest. I worked out 5 days a week, doing a combination of kickboxing, cross fit and running. I was eating very little carbs, which may have been a bit unrealistic to continue, and mostly just eating lean meat and a ####load of vegetables. I couldn't cut out drinking, because I am young and like to party (a lot...) so I decided I would stop drinking beer and make my new drink of choice something lighter like vodka soda. I was very happy with my results after the contest, and I will most definitely continue working out the same way, usually going to the gym ends up being the best part of my day. I probably wont be quite as strict with my eating, but I'm going to try to keep it up as much as possible.
I've noticed a few people here say that they've found it really hard to lose weight, but for me I found that after the first few weeks the weight really started to fall off. Plus, getting lots of compliments from people and having to buy lots of new clothes because I was swimming in the old ones was really good motivation to keep going too. I think once you get into a routine that is realistic, it's easy to keep going because you feel so much more energetic and generally just better about yourself.

had some pepsi max today, i think its better than coke zero. may have to make the switch.
i also stumbled upon an easy way to get a nice bit of cardio in without thinking: go to ikea. that place is so huge and theres so much to see i spent an hour wandering around and realized.. hmmmm im starving.. oooh ya ive walking around walmart and ikea for hours!
im going to round up by .2 lbs for the purpose of this post and proclaim i've now lost 30 lbs since march 3rd.this is the 1st time ive felt proud of what ive done and feel like its a process ill be continuing for at least 10 more months (the calorie counting). i feel like that a year from now i can check back in and be 100% certain ill still be eating healthy and at my goal weight and maintaining it.
today was a good day!
