Calgary had a big fire that destroyed half the town too, so it's not as irrelevant as you might think.

I guess you never heard of the Great Calgary Fire of 1886.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Fire_of_1886

The Flame logo also has relevance because of the Olympic Torch, the flaring at oil wells and the Calgary Tower.

easy to see why...

from the link: "Ultimately, fourteen buildings were destroyed or razed in attempts to control the blaze. Losses were estimated at $103,200, however no one was killed or injured."

must have been a slow news decade...

also easy to see why it's called "the Calgary Fire of 1886" at wiki and not the GREAT Calgary Fire of 1886

something like 65,000 died when the Union forces sacked atlanta...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_Campaign#Aftermath

just sayin'...

I don't think anyone is expecting people the world over to have heard of the Calgary fire, but:

Population of Calgary, 1884:506
Calgary was a small place at that time, this was a major fire for the city in that context and as such gave at least a historical backing to keeping the name (as well as the Turner valley connection)

although completely unworkable, it WOULD be kinda fun to have a barnstorming team move every year or two. Maybe quit if they find the perfect home...

just a fantasy...

Maybe, maybe not. My girlfriend (born and raised here) called her dog 'the littlest hobo' the other day... I raised my eyebrow... she says "you know, from that old TV show". Apparently that little mutt got around.

This is a perfect goal song for a new Manitoba NHL team.

And so it's settled then.

The Winnipeg Hobos.

It's perfect. It recognizes the cities core demographic, it's catchy, historically accurate, and the team will save hundreds on uniforms by using old potato sacks, and shop rags as uniforms. Of course they will be RBK edge potato sacks... but they will still be cheaper.

The only reason TNSE is looking to buy it is a long term plan to get it into Southern Ontario.

I have a contact who's close to their group, and they are posturing with the NHL for a "Loss Rider Window" whereby, if they experience no profits in the
peg for 5 consecutive years, it opens up a relocation window to S. Ontario.

It is my understanding that they are at the point where TNSE is now negotiating the transfer fee TNSE would pay MLSE for the territory.

Winnipeg is being used a temporary home, to get the team closer to the one market that an investor would actually want - S. Ontario.
