Ahhh, interesting. While there is no such thing as spot fat loss, would SS cardio be more effective for gut fat loss?

Personally, I don't have weight issues. I've been called the Adonis of my generation. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice because no amount of work or diet will ever lead to success like mine. Sorry everyone.

I think the best ways to lose belly fat is a high interval program combined with diet/consistent caloric defecit.
For one reason or another, high interval training burns fat at a more consistent rate all over the body than steady state (S S) cardio.
S S cardio is a lot better for maintaining muscle mass instead of losing body fat.
(I'm not a trainer by any means, I just have a general interest in this kind of stuff so if i'm incorrect could someone correct me)

There is no such thing as one type of exercise "targeting" a certain area of fat over another. There is no such thing as "spot reduction". You operate at a caloric deficit and you will lose fat, non-preferentially.

The best way to lose belly fat is the same as all the other fat on your body; operate at a caloric deficit.
The question is whether or not high intensity intervals burn more calories than moderate intensity running.

Err, I meant that HIIT is better at burning the fat than "normal cardio". Thanks for clarifying though.

It's not really a question anymore. HIIT is leaps and bounds ahead of straight cardio for burning more calories.

thanks everyone,
I just realized what that MMA class I am taking is all about and its HIIT.
couldnt think of the correct phrase.
and yes, we do ours for 45 minutes twice a week and it absolutely kicks the crap out of you, no pun intended.
I think you have to do a combination of Cardio and HIIT to get the fat loss.
But then again, any exercise will help.
Speaking to the running thing..I tried to do the C25K and I stalled out at week 3. just realized I am NOT a runner.
There's other ways of achieving the goal than running.

Google "couch to 5K" programs - it's a gradual running/walking program that gets you up to running 10/1's after 12 weeks or so. It's a great way to get into running without burning out at the beginning by pushing way too hard. So many people abandon workout routines because they push themselves far too hard, too fast. I'm guilty of that myself.
I'm on a very slow weight loss journey - about 13 lbs lost since late February. I'm just trying to be more aware of what I eat and how much I eat and it's been working relatively well. I've signed up for a couple of races (including a half-marathon in September) and have been doing a run/walk with friends as well as one cross training day a week. (So any of you guys who talk about fat girls out running and laugh at how they look - watch what you say, you might be talking about me )

Good job! I admire you for signing up for the half marathon! By the way, I am a fat runner too, but with some hard work and smart choices, we will become just Runners!

I joined the Running Room's running club a month ago. They run on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. Never went running for exercise before in my life. First day, I started with the 2.5KM and found that it was too easy. I then jumped to the 5KM and woah... next day I couldn't get out of a chair. My muscles were so sore, I could barely move.
But I went again on Wednesday night and the next Sunday morning and now I think I might be ready to go further than 5KM. However, the half-marathon scares me. I am going to ask on Sunday if they have something between the 5K and the half-marathon.

Most half marathons have a 10k run as well. Sounds like that's more what you're looking for.

If I was going to get picky (which of course I am), moderate intensity aerobic exercise burns fat as a fuel, whereas high intensity training burns carbohydrates as a fuel. This is based on RER ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respiratory_Exchange_Ratio). In high intensity it exceeds 1.0, in moderate intensity it is around 0.7.
Of course, the fuel exercise uses at that time isn't particularly important for fat loss, because it's replacing the fuel using anabolic processes that will have a catabolic effect on your fat stores if you're at a caloric deficit.

What high intensity training does is cause an increased oxygen metabolism after the cessation of exercise. Whether or not this results in more calories burned than moderate intensity exercise depends on the specific intensity and duration of each, and will differ between individuals.
Suffice to say that prescribing either high intensity exercise vs moderate intensity exercise will depend entire on the individual, their goals, their preferences, time available for exercise, and their previous training experience.

Staring in a week or so I am going to do a crash diet. I know its all un healthy and what not but I like doing them because they are fun and make me actually try to accomplish. I will get a fat burning running program off run keeper for HIIT and then keep calorie intake nice and low while taking in lots of proteins. I am aiming for a nice un healthy approach of 30 pounds in 30 days should be a good time! Then after I will ease myself back to normal while keeping up with physical activity to try to keep 20 of the lbs off

Thanks for the laugh, but on a serious note, I'm assuming you are older than me, since there can only be one Adonis of each generation.

It's tough to say because I perpetually look youthful and awesome. Now excuse me, I'm off to go wink at girls with my pecs.

Make sure to practice the "up-wink" (both pecs at the same time) and the ever challenging "one up, one down wink". Also, don't come around TD Square, as the combination of Adonosity could create a space-time irregularity resulting in countless women losing control of their clothing. While appreciated by lesser men I'm sure, the chaos could prove catastrophic.
