I also just started a class called MMA Aggression.
its basically an intense aerobics work out (5 minutes of full out cardio with 1 minute rest) and some MMA punching and kicking a bag thrown in.
Wow, talk about a work out.
We go for 45 minutes and I am completely exhausted by the end of it.
I throw that in twice a week on top of my regular work out.

I started on October 17, 2010 and weigh in night before last and have now lost 60 pounds. 5 pants sizes and I have dropped 3 shirt sizes (XXXL to L)
I was exactly like you, Smoker and not eating healthy.
thats all changed now and the ole adage is, if I can do it, anyone can.
I wish you every bit of success in the world.

Awesome, Thanks Axel and Congrats to you! A mutual aquantance of ours (Scott S), who also lost alot of weight is one of my mentors.
I am 6'6 and until a few years ago always weighed in around 255 lbs. On March 23, 2011, I weighed 315 lbs. That was unacceptable, and instead of feeling sorry for myself, I am doing something about it.
Thanks to each and every one of you for sharing your stories. Even you little weenie 160 pounders are motivation!

I started Insanity almost 2 months ago. I started at 236 and now i'm 214. I have a week and a half left. Ideally, I want to end up at 210.
I'm going to start P90x in May. Pretty excited about that.
I highly recommend the Insanity/P90x programs

How have you found the 2nd month of workouts? Does the intensity ramp up a lot? I'm going through the recovery week right now and starting month 2 on Monday. So far I've only lost 5 pounds (weight loss + muscle gain), but dammit I just can't stick to the diet. Cottage cheese sucks ass.

The 2nd month is pretty much hell on earth. You do an extra set and the exercises seem way harder (ie: I find myself looking forward to the ski abs).
I found the biggest reason for my weight loss are my eating habits. I'd say that eating healthy is 60-70% of why i've lost so much weight.
I've been following a Peleolithic Diet, which I enjoy. Here's a good blog about recipes and stuff.

What are your plans to maintain after the Insanity and/or P90X programs are finished? I have a friend who lost 25 lbs doing P90X, but once he was done he put most of it back on. I think the problem is that these programs are good for the 90 days but then what? do you start doing cardio to maintain or get a gym membership and if so, why not just do those things from the beginning instead of Insanity or P90X?

Insanity and P90x are programs that you probably won't plateau on. Your strength/cardio endurance will only continue to rise. There's professional trainers in the videos that still need to take breaks, etc.
After i'm done Insanity/P90x i'll just repeat doing them. Just because the programs that they provide only last 60/90 days doesn't mean that you can't restart them and still see results.
Or if I don't feel like doing it after, i'll just hit the gym hard. It's all about a lifestyle change, which is maybe why your friend put weight back on (no offence)

No offense taken. His problem was that he went hard for the 90 days and then he didn't do any exercise once he was done. He fell back into his old habits. Obviously the key to any good exercise program is to commit to it for life. It really is a lifestyle change and not just some 90 day quick fix, because if you see it like that, you will be in the same boat you were in before the exercise program.
I hope you can keep up with those workouts, I know they are hard as hell. Good on you.

Your friend probably didn't adjust for the fact that he was burning 800+ fewer calories per day after stopping the workouts.

They say if you're not getting results with regular cardio, switch to high intensity interval training. Why not just do HIIT from the start then?

Probably because a lot of people don't know that HIIT is better for you than regular cardio

I don't know who says that, but they're two very different things. It's not clear-cut one over the other, it depends on your goals, current fitness, previous training, etc, etc.

It's very very difficult. In these threads all you hear about is the people who are currently successful who just started and really committed. There's a reason you only hear about 1 or 2 having maintained weight loss for a long time, because 95% of people gain it all back. The people who have gained all the weight back aren't particularly eager to come in a thread like this and talk about it.

Here's a good article regarding 5 interesting points about working out/fitness.
#2 for HIIT

However, when the researchers adjusted the results to correct for the difference in energy cost, the interval-training group showed a 900% greater loss in subcutaneous fat than the endurance group. In other words, calorie for calorie, interval training was nine times more effective than steady state exercise.

Concerning fat loss, I've heard if you are doing HIIT workouts correctly, you should only be able to do them no more than 3 times a week (25 minute sessions max) because it is so exhausting.
For steady state, I've read that if you are on the endomorphic side, you should be doing it 5-6 times per week for anywhere from 30 to 60 min.
This info was from different sources but if both are correct, does that mean that the shorter, less frequent HIIT sessions are more effective for fat burning than the SS cardio?
Also, how can you tell if your body fat is subcutaneous or visceral?

Subcutaneous fat is the fat that is located directly under the skin. Visceral fat is the fat that basically surrounds your organs for padding. (Cellulite etc)
Visceral fat is the type of fat that surrounds organs. (Beer gut)
You have both types of fat, it's just that HIIT targets one type and not the other
