I'd really like Harper to give a straight answer to Duceppe's question. If the "other option" wasn't for him to become PM if Paul Martin's government lost the confidence of the house, what was it?

What's with the Canadian government 101 lecture? I think most people watching this have a basic understanding on how it works.

The difference between that and a coalition is this: there isn't one. Harper's a hypocrite on this issue--thus his obvious panic over the question.

What are you talking about? The agreement was to vote against the Liberals and defeat the government.

I believe in the Jays.

I'm with Layton on that (abolishing the Senate). Good luck with that though, you'd need constitution change for that and beter men then Layton have tried.

Ignatieff says there's a choice between Liberals and Conservatives, Layton calls that comment arrogant.
Ahahah. Layton is such a joke.

Here's the letter, emphasis mine. As you'll see, the letter was to advise the GG NOT to dissolve parliament, and explore "other options."
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson,
C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
Governor General
Rideau Hall
1 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A1
Excellency,
As leaders of the opposition parties, we are well aware that, given the Liberal minority government, you could be asked by the Prime Minister to dissolve the 38th Parliament at any time should the House of Commons fail to support some part of the government’s program.
We respectfully point out that the opposition parties, who together constitute a majority in the House, have been in close consultation. We believe that, should a request for dissolution arise this should give you cause, as constitutional practice has determined, to consult the opposition leaders and consider all of your options before exercising your constitutional authority.
Your attention to this matter is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Leader of the Opposition
Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada
Gilles Duceppe, M.P.
Leader of the Bloc Quebecois
Jack Layton, M.P.
Leader of the New Democratic Party
Unless he is referring to some secret plan that involves Paul Martin, duct tape, a chair, a one-way ticket to whitehorse and a roofie... it's pretty clear he's talking about a coalition.
You might like Harper; I get that. But you have to admit that he's an absolute hypocrite on this issue.

How is that clear at all. I see nothing beyond a request for consultation with the Attorney General.
I don't see coalition government in there anywhere.
Far different from the coalition agreement signed by the NDP and Liberals
