Thanks for the offer but yeah it would make more sense to find someone local. I'm sure it's probably a 5 minute job, I just don't have a soldering gun or wire and I was never very good at it.

There is actually a capacitor "package" that is sold online and it is all 5 caps that can go bad. I think it was like 7 bucks or something.

Might as well change them all out while you are at it....and it really is easy if you have any "tech" like abilities.

You can buy a iron and solder for under $20. Then what you can do is find some bad computers or anything electronic and practice on those boards of taking old solder off and resoldering. No real need to pay anyone at all.

agreed, the source will sell pretty basic models for $20 and places like b&e electronics or active electronics can sell you your caps at very reasonable prices.

The caps in the pics are big enough that the solder job would probably be easy to easy/medium difficulty. I would definitely like to know how this turns out if you DIY,

don't forget to grab a solder wick or a solder pump to take the original caps off. It sounds a little intimidating but if you grab the old computers like pimking suggests and pracice desoldering / resoldering some resistors or capacitors, you'll be fine. It's surprisingly easy after a couple practice tries.

The soldering job on the capacitors isn't hard, either. Not really technical. I only did it in grade 10 before attempting it on my own TV. It's a pretty straightforward thing, actually, and really, really easy.

Already tried that. Wasn't as easy as it sounds.

I've looked but haven't actually tried to really dig for them.

How did this turn out?

The 20" LG LCD I use for music production just died. A quick check on badcaps.net show many with the same display dying around the end of 2010/early 2011 so it's the most likely culprit. Yesterday, it wouldn't turn on without the power LED flashing a bit first. Today, it won't turn on at all.

I'm not looking forward to tearing it open but I guess it has to be done.

Not sure where to find replacement caps of the right type however.

What component do you guys this this is?

Ive got a Visionquest Renoir LVQ32HLA 32" as the bedroom TV.

A few months ago, I turned it on and got some gibberish text on the screen instead of the normal splash screen. I unplugged it and tried again, and it worked fine, or so I thought. When I went into the menu to adjust the color temps, I found that the picture only was good under 'normal' settings. Under cool, it would be all tinted green and under warm, it was all tinted blue.

At this point, I'm looking into warranty through the CC it was purchased on, and it is proving to be a hassle. And since the 'normal' setting is still working, I left it alone and lived with it.

A week ago, I turned it on, and there was no picture, all black, and with sound. I could access the menu and on screen stuff OK, just no picture. So, I went into the menu again and changed the color temps and lo and behold, the 'normal' no longer has a picture, while the cool is all green tinted, and the warm is all blue tinted, but showing a picture.

Resetting the LCD, adjusting the picture settings in the menu, different connections (HDMI, component, s-video, etc) dont make a difference.

So, it appears to me that something happened to the 'red' gun on the screen. Since I am in the middle of a complicated warranty procedure, I'd just like to know what could cause such things on a plasma LCD.

Just look at which ones are bad and order them off of here. They're right on the Canadian boarder in MN so it shouldn't take too long to get to you.

Careful messing around with the capacitors, they can shock you pretty good. People have died from touching them while attempting to fix tv's.

Obviously it should be unplugged and the board left for several days to hopefully allow trickle discharge or manual discharge.

Hey I'm bringing the thread back.

We had another tv at my hotel die from caps today so I used my Droid to make a film on how to fix it. So at the moment I'm making a video and I will post it as soon as it's done.

That would be nice. I need to order new caps for my LG 204WT and I'm not sure about desoldering and soldering on new ones.

The video was too large per YOUtube. So I will have to cut it up into three parts. I just wish that they would of told me that before I spent 1 1/2 hours uploading it.
