Default Anyone repaired their own LCD TV?

I bought a Samsung TV just under 2 years ago for some pretty serious money (to me anyway) and last week it just stopped working.

I did some reading online and found out that several components are faulty in this particular unit's power source and that there is a class action lawsuit in the States. As a result Samsung is offering free repairs, but only if it is this component.

Local TV repair guy they called came and took my tv away, and of course now says it is other more expensive components in the power source that have gone and thus will not bill samsung but myself - a really big bill I can't afford this month.

I've looked up the power board and it's not that expensive but has anyone replaced the power source in an LCD TV themselves - is it difficult to do?

Pretty random thing so I don't know if anyone has attempted it but I thought it would be worth a try on CP. I traded in a bunch of games for Dragon Age 2 earlier in the week and I am dying to try it. Sorry to any TV repair guys, not trying to undermine your job or anything, just don't have the money to pay for repairs to an expensive TV I expected to last longer.

Sounds like the TV repair guy is trying to job you huge. I would look into someone else or ask Samsung to. A lot of those guys will put in another bad part not covered just to screw you into paying a big bill, my father used to do tv repairs and he knew quite a few guys that would do that.

Crappy part is, even if I try to do that now, I have to pay the bill for diagnosing the problem to him. Samsung said they won't pay for that now because their faulty component wasn't responsible.

Ya man I totally feel a bit like he might be trying to run the bill up, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but it's a huge TV and even though I'm a younger guy it might look like I have loads of cash to be taken for as a result.

I think I am going to order the part myself and install it, there are lots of guides online, am a little nervous about it but I do usually build all my own computers so I think I've talked myself into it.

Still sounds wrong, was he not just supposed to replace the component that Samsung stated was faulty in some units or did you specifically ask him to diagnose what was wrong? It would really suck if you had to pay this guy a cent. If you are good with electronics then I think you are going the right way by doing it yourself, good luck.

Ya Samsung made me agree on the phone that pickup and diagnostic costs would be on me if it wasn't their faulty part so I think I am on the hook for that no matter what.

The whole power board is going for only 34 $ online so I think I will give it a try, there are a bunch of videos of people doing it on youtube. Thanks for the reply and luck - probably need it!

I just did this to about 9 TVs at the hotel I work at.

We have LG tv's and the capacitors go bad. As soon as I opened the back of the tv up there is the board and it's easy to see the bad caps.

This is the exact board

Then take a look at the capacitors, if they're not flat and they have a bulge like this picture then they're bad.

Pretty easy from there; some had 4 caps bad and some had only one. Either way BAM fixed the tv for $4 instead of the TV guy charging us $250/per when he was only spending $4

Awesome - that is great help. When I get it back I will take a look at the caps now before I even order the new power board in case I can do it that cheap. Nice work btw.

No problem, the caps were only made to last for a couple of years (seriously only like 15k hours) they don't want TV's to last long like they did before so you go out and buy a new one.

You will probably have to order the Caps (digikey.com) and wait a few days but they are only around $1/per cap

There's a guy who fixes LCDs on CP. Can't remember who he was though. Gobsgraham is the arcade guy, I don't recall if it was him or someone else.

Will do - If I lose the patient I might need a week or two to mourn first .

Yes definitely check the capacitors, that was the issue on my Samsung TV upstairs, it isn't a difficult fix, just check for vids on Youtube.

Well I have decided against self surgery in the end. The place is going to install a completely new power board for parts + about 100 bucks including the diagnostic they've already done and I decided to go with that rather than pay just for the diagnostic I'm already on the hook for.

I've got to say though, threads like this make me love CP - knowledgeable people on just about everything and always willing to share it (as long as you're a Flames fan).

Thanks again guys for replying. When the caps go on my folks older LCD I am going to install them and will dig this thread out.

An LN52 580 cky. From what I came to understand it involves many samsungs produced in 2008 but they are not fixing the boards pre-emptively, they will only pay for replacement parts if it breaks down.

I'd like to know who might be able to fix the capacitors on our Sony 42" LCD TV if anyone around here does it or knows someone who does.

I've seen the vids and stuff but I'm not a fan or soldering so I'd just rather take the baord out, give them the caps and let them solder them in for me.

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Jason

A little late to this thread, sorry.

I did exactly this thing myself. It's in my blog.

http://garagecraft.blogspot.com/2011...7-vs-2000.html

It's pretty easy. After getting the parts together, I was able to fix it in the time between getting home from work and going to the game. I had to in that time, too, because my wife was annoyed that I would be able to go, but she couldn't watch the game. Pretty easy.

Jason if it would cost you an arm and a leg I would do it for free but it would cost too much to mail it to me.
