I'm down 23 lbs in a little under 2 months, for the first month it was 90% cardio, just walking and jogging. A month ago I started weight training and setting goals for my cardio, and as of 3 weeks ago I'm watching every calorie I intake and burn and its working, but its a lot of work. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I do 45mins of cardio at 5am, then when I get home from work I'm at the gym for another 60-90 mins doing weight training and another 30 min of cardio. Then Tuesdays is only 60-90 mins after work or weights and cardio, Saturday is 60 mins of cardio and another 60 of weights. Rest on Thursdays and Sundays.
Lots of work but I'm loving the results, I figure I'm down at least 30-35 lbs of fat, and I've lost 3-4 inches on my waist already.
freetrainers.com and myfitnesspal.com are both helping me huge.

You don't need p90x to start really working out.
There is no real secret to p90x, and their "Muscle Confusion" hook is a scam. Plain and simple if you work out hard for 60-90 minutes a day on any program you're going to see results. p90x is purely a motivational tool, and in that regard it works great, but it's not like they stumbled upon some workout secret.

Sure, but a lot of that beer gut is muscle that ain't too muscular.
You also can't target fat loss. So situps/crunches won't do anything to help someone get rid of their gut.
If you want to lose weight you have to use up more calories than you are taking in. The ideal target would be -500 calories daily to lose 1lb per week. You could go more but it isn't all that healthy.
So if you eat 3000 calories per day you should be finding a way to use up 3500 calories, or cut down on your intake with less activity.

You make it sound like p90x is smoke and mirrors, and it is no such thing. I don't know of any workout, except for maybe the insanity one shown above that is as intense or produces better results.
Like you said, working out hard is no secret and to get results you need to work for it. But I disagree that the muscle confusion is a scam, I am absolutely wiped after every workout and I am in great shape.
If you have the option - commute to work on a bike. I did it a couple of summers ago before the birth of our second child and the fitness gains and weight loss was unbelievable. The commute for me was 18km one way so I was basically doing two cardio sessions a day and it doesn't even feel like you're 'working out' - you're just riding to work.

What he is saying is that this concept of needing a ton of variety where your routine is constantly being changed is not any more effective than sticking with the same simple routine while throw in minor variations. Some of the best body building and strength gaining routines are extremely simple. The key is intensity. It is likely that people that have worked out before on their own and then switch to P90x and see better results simply weren't pushing themselves as hard when they were doing it on their own (that and they may have been using crappy form).

You may very well be in great shape from P90x, then again, you might not. Maybe you do your deadlift and discover that you are a lot weaker than you thought you would be. I don't know you, so I couldn't say, but I can't imagine that a routine that focuses almost entirely on using bodyweight as being all that great for strength gains.

I completely agree with you. I started biking to work in September, and everything you said above applies. I started p90x in Sept as well, and just am just finishing the last week of my second run through of it.
The best part of biking to work is that you don't ever wait in traffic, or have to stand next to 50 coughing people on the train. Plus you get a nice cardio workout twice a day.

I don't doubt that you are wiped after every workout but that has nothing to do with "muscle confusion", it's the intensity of the workout that you are doing that is responsible for the results.
I'm not totally knocking the program, it's a great motivational tool, but to say that you can't get the same results with another program means that their marketing is working pretty well on you. Yes some programs are better than others, but if you got any other program from a qualified trainer, and put in the same ammount of effort as you do with p90x, you'd see pretty similar results, and it has nothing to do with "Muscle confusion".

It does involve extensive amounts of free weights too, and pull/push ups at maximum reps is incredible for strength building. Where I have noticed the biggest difference is by doing plyometrics 2-3 times per week, it has made me a much better soccer player in a very short time, the explosiveness and quickness is what I have really noticed.
I agree, you can get results in a variety of ways. I've had programs from personal trainers, and high quality workouts geared towards sports specific goals. I haven't had the same results as p90x with any of them, however like you said it all comes back to the intensity of the workouts. It is not so much their marketing, as I am up for trying any different type of workout, it is more the luxury of being able to do such an intense workout from home without having to go to the gym. (That and Doc Horton yelling at me to stop being a wuss or he will come to my house and slap me)
It really pains me to say it, especially with Margarita BBQ weather coming up.
Drop beef from the menu. Of more specifically the huge pieces of cow heaven from Costco - mmmmm.
Also - bodyrock.tv if you are a guy is a great motivational tool and are very simple to do workouts in your own home.
