I meant what point during the season/calendar year? How long before the start of the next season does a decision need to be made for preparations to have enough time to complete for a franchise relocation.

I'd imagine anytime up until they release the schedule. Last season I heard they had two schedules ready. ONe with Phoenix and the other with Winnipeg.
This of course could leave the Moose in the lurch.

The Canucks are already investigating moving the Moose to Chilliwack.

I thought their plan was to move the Moose to Abbotsford and sucker us into going to Chilliwack.

The NHL can withdraw from the account on the 15th of every month. So far, they have not.

Sometime last fall, the league put a deadline of the end of December 2010 to identify a potential owner. i.e.: if Glendale hadn't found anybody by that point, the league would have to consider other options. Glendale found Hulziser before that deadline.

Just finish it. But if I were an owner, I'd indicate to Bettman no more money to help these lost causes.
|
I doubt the league has any interest in owning a team again. This was a very special case necessitated by what the league felt was a direct assault on it's ability to control how it does business.
Under normal circumstances, I think the league only takes over another team if the existing owner simply hands it back over.

And having a team in Winnipeg instead of Phoenix means the 6 other Canadian teams get to keep more money by sending less to the revenue sharing pot. Right?

I could see the NHL continuing the ownership with either Phoenix or Atlanta until the economy turns around or QC is ready. The NBA stepped in and bought the New Orleans Hornets when they couldn't find an owner.
Quote:
"George Shinn has been an exceptional owner for New Orleans and Gary Chouest has been extraordinarily supportive as a minority owner," said Stern. "However, in light of the uncertain economic situation in New Orleans and Louisiana, Gary has decided not to move forward with the purchase of George's majority interest although he was prepared to remain an investor in the team. In the absence of any viable purchaser seeking to own the Hornets in New Orleans, I recommended to the NBA Board of Governors that the best way to assure stability and the adequate funding of the franchise would be for the league to step in, and complete the transaction and assume control. The Hornets have a strong management team in Hugh Weber, Dell Demps, and Monty Williams and we have recruited Jac Sperling, a seasoned sports executive and New Orleans native, to be the team's chairman and governor, with Hugh serving as president and alternate governor. I have notified Governor Jindal and Mayor Landrieu about this transaction and will continue our dialogue with them about ways to strengthen the franchise for new ownership in New Orleans."
|
and this is a team with attendance around 14,000. I'm thinking it's getting hard to find owners anywhere with the bad economy, as sports teams are now a luxury.

The richest guy in Canada has a standing offer to buy the team and given the likelihood that continued ownership in Phoenix means losses for the owners collectively, I think that seems unlikely to be supported unless that 100 million goes to whoever operates it, hulsizger, the nhl or whoever. I think Glendale takes the big hit up front or they move. To me I would assume that the bond issue is make or break regardless.

They can play in the Corral for a few years, then, when the Flames move into their new arena, the Thrashers can move into the Saddledome.
Win-win.

Or they can pull an LA Lakers/Clippers and play in the same venue.

Brunt is an idiot who thinks it is 1987. Before 1988, the Canadian TV deals were split between Canadian teams only. Brunt seems to be convinced that this is still the case, when in fact, all national TV deals are split between the 30 teams equally. So no, Winnipeg is not going to cost the Canadian teams money.
As far as revenue sharing goes, every single revenue projection I've ever seen for a Winnipeg team relies on revenue sharing. So no, Winnipeg isn't likely to save the other teams anything.

Well a team in Winnipeg may lose less, which is kind of a saving, my guess is the league looks at Winnipeg as a better place to mothball the franchise until such time as it becomes marketable to somewhere with a better arena.

The lowest projection I've seen has them only generating $70M per year. Which means they'll draw far less revenue sharing dollars than Phoenix does, which in turn saves the owners money.

Rumor has it that Vancouver has been in talks with a group from Chilliwack, BC in the event the NHL decides to approve a Coyotes relocation move to Winnipeg.
