As soon as they start talking about sequencing the DNA of an alien in terms of human DNA you can pretty much stop listening.. There's no reason aliens would use DNA at all.

Science Fiction inspired convergent evolution verses a more realistic divergent evolution?

At a macro level convergent evolution makes sense for some things; eyes, wings, etc have all evolved independently even on our own planet, and the laws of physics apply everywhere. A creature on a far flung planet is going to evolve to see using similar principles for similar spectra (assuming a similar star anyway).

But at a molecular level, all life on earth shares the same molecular machinery because we all descended from the same predecessor. But very early on the way that machinery developed could have happened very differently, or differently enough that it'd be so obviously different than our own.

Almost all life on Earth.

Don't forget about those crazy bacteria in that lake in California.

Its possible we find alien life that shares something very similar to us in DNA, enough so that we'd recognize it I'm sure.

Similar yes, in that it'll be some kind of molecule that drives the molecular machinery of life, allowing for descent with modification, but it won't be DNA (the chances that it would use the exact same nucleotides and phosphates and sugars would be zero).

Not really no, when they analyzed the DNA of that bacteria it fits within a known order. Those bacteria still contain phosphorous and while they've developed the ability to use arsenic in place of phosphorous, they can still use phosphorous and actually grow better with it vs. arsenic.

So it's not a parallel tree of life, that was just an over-enthusiastic view of the research.
