Does it matter if a game fits your pre-defined notions of genre's? Both Mass Effect games were phenomenal, worth the time spent playing and indicative of the quality that Bioware continually produces.

I for one like how Bioware is changing things between sequels - keeps the gameplay fresh while retaining the very strong story lines that they are great at.

It only pains me a little bit that such awesomeness is coming out of Edmonton.

The demo for DA2 was much more what I would expect on normal difficulty. I am glad they made the change so I don't feel so pathetic.
Having played similar RPGs in the past, I too expected DA to be more in line with those - that in most fights one doesn't have to worry or think too much - and the game just kicked my ass until I got it in my thick head that I have to play smarter.

DA has lots of big fights that force you into strategic thinking. Lots. Not just a few bosses. At first the system in DA seemed simplistic, but then I realized that it was for that very reason more tactical than say Neverwinter Nights. A finite set of small variables in play that you have to take into account - once you get used to it, it's not a problem, but you have to adjust your mindset a bit.

Like if there's a row of archers doing scattershots and whatnot - I had to learn that I have to actually take them into account, because it's a combination of small advantages that finally keeps killing me.

After that, I saw that I had to do the same: actually use my abilities intelligently and not think that getting a small advantage like pushing someone off his feet or stunning him doesn't matter. When I replayed the game, it was comfortable on hard difficulty. You put a glyph on the ground that gives you a slight advantage or one that sends the opponents flying on their asses, you disrupt the spellcaster when he's going for a big one, you keep putting the rogue in flanking position, you realize that you can in fact do a lot with the bow, and so on.

My most embarrassing moment was having to turn down the difficulty to easy in Fallout New Vegas. I was arrogant and it cost me. I had it on hard until the end, hardcore rules, never used VATS, didn't bother with having a strong varied arsenal with me - and then the final fight came, and I had absolutely NOTHING. I was tired, determined to finish the game that night, and it was a total comedy.

Today is the last day to download the DA2 demo and play it.

The counter isn't even at 900,000.

There is no way it's going to hit 1 million before tonight.

Shucks.

Well... one way or another (I think BioWare is being nice), the counter hit 1 million.

Totally agree with the Mass Effect comparison although I think that Mass Effects gameplay changed way more from 1-2 than Dragon Ages did from Origins to 2.

And yes, the dialogue is very laggy for me too.
Auto attack is disabled in the demo, you can turn it on in the full game. That should fix most of the button mashing.

Free money and XP - you so know they designed the game to accommodate this boost.

The auto attacking will be useful for ranged/caster types (aka SISSIES), but for the manly melee warriors, button mashing is awesome.

You can't leave the spellcasting to the AI, no matter what class your main character is. The true general directs his troops from the back where he has a total view of the battlefield.

As for the Bioware "challenges" - there's a new one already after the million downloads one - it's just an attempt to make fans promote the game for free through social media. The rewards are pretty much meaningless.

If any of you are looking to complete the demo to get the free sword add-on (or whatever it is), make sure you log into your EA account first. I just finished it and then realized I wasn't logged in so I didn't get credit... now I have to do it again!

I downloaded the demo and played it, and I think my problem with the game will be the same as the Origins: It takes me forever to get into RPGs.

Still, Origins became one of my favourite RPGs once I got on a roll, but I fear it's going to be another uphill battle overcoming my initial boredom with DA2.

Just played through again as a rouge. They've obviously spent a ton of time on the combat animations and it makes a huge difference in my opinion. It's damn fun to play a rogue even with the limited skills in the demo.

Also - love the DPS statistic in the profile screen. Every RPG should have that.

I'm assuming you get the pre-order bonus items through the EA Downloader?

This is something I will have to think about, too. I played the first one as basically a dps warrior with Alister tanking.

I tried that this round, and found that I was constantly pulling off the tank. Of course, it's hard to tell in a demo, as well. I tried the rogue, and found that it seemed and felt easier to control my aggro, as it were.
