The demo for DA2 was much more what I would expect on normal difficulty. I am glad they made the change so I don't feel so pathetic.

Having played similar RPGs in the past, I too expected DA to be more in line with those - that in most fights one doesn't have to worry or think too much - and the game just kicked my ass until I got it in my thick head that I have to play smarter.
DA has lots of big fights that force you into strategic thinking. Lots. Not just a few bosses. At first the system in DA seemed simplistic, but then I realized that it was for that very reason more tactical than say Neverwinter Nights. A finite set of small variables in play that you have to take into account - once you get used to it, it's not a problem, but you have to adjust your mindset a bit.
Like if there's a row of archers doing scattershots and whatnot - I had to learn that I have to actually take them into account, because it's a combination of small advantages that finally keeps killing me.
After that, I saw that I had to do the same: actually use my abilities intelligently and not think that getting a small advantage like pushing someone off his feet or stunning him doesn't matter. When I replayed the game, it was comfortable on hard difficulty. You put a glyph on the ground that gives you a slight advantage or one that sends the opponents flying on their asses, you disrupt the spellcaster when he's going for a big one, you keep putting the rogue in flanking position, you realize that you can in fact do a lot with the bow, and so on.
My most embarrassing moment was having to turn down the difficulty to easy in Fallout New Vegas. I was arrogant and it cost me. I had it on hard until the end, hardcore rules, never used VATS, didn't bother with having a strong varied arsenal with me - and then the final fight came, and I had absolutely NOTHING. I was tired, determined to finish the game that night, and it was a total comedy.
