I'm generally thinking that those deal-a-day websites are pretty bad for service companies. I was tempted to pick up this deal since I work in the NE, but then figured it would not be that great of a deal if a thousand people start trying to book the service at the same time.
For restaurants, I now only buy them for places that I already frequent. If I am going to try something new, I could just pick up an Entertainment coupon book and get the same deal (i.e. 50% off to a limit) without having to prepay the 50%.
I've heard a few stories where service levels drop for people that come in with a Groupon (or similar deal). It also isn't that great for the retailer, so I wonder how long these sites will last. Here is an interesting perspective from the Bob Phibbs.

I would say on average I get a little bit of attitude when I go to a restaurant with one of the "deals." I still like doing them, even if I don't know the place, since it gives me an excuse to try something new, although I've definitely gotten more selective about which ones I actually buy (hard look at menu/location). One waitress gave me a real hard time about "making sure I tip on the whole amount," which I always do. (I actually usually tip an extra 5% when I'm these deals.) I get that some people probably short the server, but giving customers attitude about it is probably not a good long term plan for higher tips.

I agree with that article. I can't possibly see how groupons can be profitable for most of the businesses. Word of mouth relates to groupon; not the actual business. Best to hoard these groupons now before businesses wise up and/or go out of business.

After my disaster with the Koncept Autoworks deal, I took my Civic that was leaking oil to Mr Lube. They told me it was the wrong filter and that the filter was damaged. They also said that they overfilled the car by at least one litre! !! BEWARE CP!!

Well if they're going to put in the wrong filter, knowing it will leak, the least they could do is put an excess liter of oil in!

Ugh, I bought two of their vouchers. I am hoping that your experience was a one off but I will be sure to wait a little while. I will probably drop off the car as I don't want to wait around for it.

I just bought a $10 Groupon for $25 of food at a nice sushi place in St Louis.
The Groupon is open for 2 more days, and in the first day, so far they sold ~6000 vouchers. The vouchers are only valid for dinner service and expires in 6 months. I figure the restaurant has 30 tables x 180 days = 5400 dinner sittings. Yet they have 6000 sitting in that time. What if they sell another 6000 vouchers tomorrow?
Of course, on fridays and weekends, each table may have two or even three sittings over the course of the evening, nevertheless, they will be in for a mad rush of customers. Probably a lot more than they anticipated

That is an interesting article although he is selling an alternative method to running a business so there is some inherent bias.
I think that the retailer has to be very careful in how they use groupon. You need to strictly limit your number as well as restrict the times of days people can use them. For example if I was a restaurant as a default the groupons would only be valid Monday to Thursday. A restaurant should be full on Friday / Saturday so by replacing those tables with groupon tables you are losing money. On other nights you break even on the groupons because there is no opportunity cost lost.
A good example of carefully crafted groupons were the emerald lakes one where they weren't valid on Saturday nights. A night which they likely book full all summer.
Also carefully limiting the number of groupons is important to as we can see from that autobody deal as you need to not over run your business with customers.

I don't know if this is the same deal, but FTD boosted the price on their site (only for Groupon customers) so it looked like you were saving more than you really were.
I've seen other businesses claiming that the Groupon sales people told them to raise their prices temporarily to cover the costs of the deal. As with all sales, it's caveat emptor.

Yes, there is definitely some inherent bias in that series of articles. However, searching for "Groupon scam" gives many similar results where either the retailer or consumer ended up not getting such a great deal. Look at the recent FTD "deal" where they pump up the price if you use the Groupon.

Update: Groupon's Bikram Yoga Northwest deal is a very hot seller today. As of 4:45pm, they have already sold over 1,500+ vouchers.
