I really wonder about those aldermen who voted against when Calgarians overwhelmingly voted for a mayor whose platform was overwhelmingly for. From what this thread is showing, those seem to be the un-prepared, the divas and jerks

Wasn't McIver pro-tunderpass as well? So by that logic a very large part of the voting public was trying to elect an official that was going to push to have this built.
Oh and John Mar, you become more and more useless every single day.

SO he's the Pierre McGuire of city council?

The bold was enough reason for me to support it though.

I know eh? Real classy Mar.
I'm surprised the papers didn't really try to rephrase it or censor it somehow.

I'm not surprised. This is the same guy that was all over twitter during the election, then threw a hissy fit when a couple of people accused him of not replying to messages in a timely fashion, so he took his ball and went home:

That was back on December 6, 2010.
So compare that response to Nenshi's twitter exchange with that girl that told him to "f*&k you already". Really shows the HUGE difference in class and attitude between the two:

Glad to see this pass and we can finally get this thing built.
Whats up with those that opposed the build it? Shows how short-sided they are and have no clue what this project really means. That or if they aren't getting stuff done in their ward, they don't want to do anything with it. Selfish nincompoops.

Lets hope so... this really concerns me though

City manager Owen Tobert noted the municipality will back away if the final terms are too much for the city to accept.

^I think that's one of those things that has to be said. Of course they aren't going to push ahead at absolutely any cost.

Just ONE reason I didn't vote for John Mar as my alderman. Seems all he cares about is police funding and his yappy little dog.
Tunnel has to to be built eventually - why wait till it's quadruple the cost? That's the attitude that has held Calgary back for decades. Glad to see common sense is slowly forging ahead.

^Mar's closest opponent (and who some have thought would win the seat if Mar switches to Provincial or Federal politics), Zak Pashak has shown himself to be completely unprofessional and unbecoming in voicing his opposition to the tunnel. He's gone off the deep end. Check out his twitter feed:

I didn't vote for Mar, only voted for Zak because he was not Mar but had my reservations about Zak as well. Particularly his campaign targeting the Bridge. Between the new Devil and the Devil you know.....

I'm not even a big airport tunderpass supporter (I'm all about the parallel runway and new terminal going ASAP) but Pashak's remarks over the last few days have me feeling regret for voting for him.

Ugh! Definitely regretting voting for him now....
With this development, and Mar being a useless tit in the Airport Tunnel debate, I really hope a new candidate steps up next election. Maybe I will hve to run....

Unfortunately with the unsustainable suburban sprawl of the city we have to spend a lot of money updating, adding and maintaining infrastructure. The only big winners are the developers while the taxpayers and city end up paying for years.

For those you who think The Other Guy would have done differently you might be disappointed. Even Dr No would have been Dr Yes on this issue - always has been.

If a large city project gets delayed for too long, it can become so expensive and cumbersome to complete, that it can be delayed for decades. Such is the case with the southwest connector from Anderson Road to Highway 8. Other big projects have been promised. None of them are higher priority than commitments to build the Airport Trail extension (tunnel) and the southeast LRT. Today, both projects look to be in jeopardy for very different reasons.
Credit needs to be given to Ald. Jim Stevenson, Mayor Naheed Nenshi and several other members of council who have made great strides in bringing the Airport tunnel project to fruition. They served notice on the Calgary Airport Authority of their intentions. The government of Alberta was pressed for financial support in short order and said no based on the fact council spent most of the 10-year Municipal Sustainability Initiative dollars on other projects.
