Default Got a urgent ques for you guys..

Some hot shot I know who thinks he is a genius emailed me this problem to solve....where do I begin.

In baseball, a player's batting average represents the ratio of hits to at-bats and is expressed as a three-digit decimal. So if a player has a .300 average, he gets a hit 3 times out of 10 times going to the plate.
A player with a .250 goes up to bat. He strikes out, and his average drops to .248.

How many hits did he have before that strike out?

It should be said that walks do not count as at-bats.

Number of hits = y
Number of at bats prior to this turn = x

y/x = .25
y/(x+1) = .248

If you solve for y, you should have your answer.

I believe it's 31.

That's pretty simple math..

25 hits...25/100 = .250 batting average
25/101 = .248 batting average.

25 works if you account for rounding. 31 is correct if it has to be exactly .248.

As getbak provided above..

31/124 = 0.250
31/125 = 0.248

Then there's a tonne of different averages that round up or down to 0.248.

63 hits / 254 at bats = 0.248031296

I don't remember simple algebra anymore but I think the formula should look something like:

X(250/1000) = X+1(248/1000)

I think......

He's right. It is pretty simple math.

One way to do it:

x=# hits
y=# @bats

x/y=0.25
x/(y+1)=0.248

0.25y/(y+1) = 0.248

0.25y=0.248y + 0.248

0.002y = 0.248

y=124
x=31
