A few months ago one of my rec hockey teammates had a massive heart attack (we didn't know this at the time) on the ice... just collapsed on the ice with 10 seconds left in the game. I started the to do CPR but to be honest, had no clue what I was doing. Luckily two guys from the other team had taken a course and took over until the paramedics got there (which ended up being 12 minutes). He went into a coma for 3 days but pulled through. The doctors said if it wasn't for us doing CPR and doing it right away, my teammate/friend would be dead or severely brain damaged.
We also used the defibrillator (amazing invention by the way) on him, ended up zapping him 3 times... one of the craziest things I have ever seen in person.
It's terrifying to say the least, to see your friend stop breathing and turn purple but it's amazing how some people can just step up in those moments.
On a side note, my friend is 27 years old and was totally healthy. It ended up that he had a 100% clogged artery which caused the heart attack.

Remember to keep updated with CPR. The latest news is that the breath isn't needed, just do chest compressions. This will keep the blood flowing in the person's body, and there will be enough oxygen left in the blood stream to keep the brain alive.

I was waiting for someone to post this. Recent studies have shown that the time wasted stopping compressions to blow air into the person can be the difference between life and death.
And CC, there is nothing wrong with breaking their ribs if it saves their life. Sometimes you have to.
Remember, if you ever have to do the compressions, to think of the Bee Gee's song "Stayin' Alive." "Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive. Stayin' alive." Thats the correct tempo (beats per minute).

Interesting. I think I took first aid and CPR about 1.5 years ago, and they had changed I think the number of breaths you give. This is obviously one of the reasons you have to keep going back for refresher courses.

I want to take a CPR/first aid course, particularly for infants and children. I'd like to know that i'd be confident if one of my nephews chokes or something.
Anyone recomend a good class or program for this?

My CPR and First Aid cert expires at the end of June this year and I need it for work so I'll have to get re-cert.
I guess I'll learn this year if they changed anything.

I'm pretty sure Level C is pretty much the standard CPR... since they taught me that when I took my course 3 years ago at St. John's Ambulance.

Someone mentioned that in the dressing room after my friend was brought to the hospital... obviously not saying anything during it to not interrupt what was already happening.
In my opinion, there's good, better and best ways to do CPR but something is always better than nothing.

I had to use it 7 years ago during pool league on one of the counter girls. She just suddenly dropped and was moaning and then she lost conscious and stopped breathing so me and another guy who knew first aid and CPR teamed up to get her heart started again and mouth to mouth until paramedics arrived. They got her to the hospital and it seemed like she was stabalizing but then she passed away, aneurysm. I was pretty out of it with shock for awhile after that. I took my course through St. Johns Ambulance.

I took an infant course when my wife was pregnant and it was a big help. They also mentioned that it's always changing based on new information. The nurse said that there is an effort to simplify things so there's less need to remember too much in an intense situation. The gist of the whole course was chest compressions to keep the blood flowing and calling 911.

Speaking of twitter, I only have 4 followers on twitter, and I'm pretty sure 3 of them are bots/spammers. However the fourth his Jenni Hogan. I have no idea why she's following me or why she thinks my incoherent ramblings are awesome, but it's a real confidence booster.

Level C First Aid and AED through St. Johns Ambulance paid for by my work. I just took the course in November 2010 and it was 2 breaths for 30 compressions. So have they changed it again?
I've never had to use CPR, but have had to use First Aid skills multiple times.
In the 2 day St. Johns course you do everything, CPR, AED, Infant resuscitation etc. Highly recommended. If you can get your work to pay for it, these are great skills to have and can save someones life.

I need to renew my certification now with the new kid.
I also parked for lunch today over a big puddle that didn't look like a big puddle and I now have a wet foot.
