Well the above article said that a hardware fix might work... so I assume if that's the case, any new PS3s could theoretically be patched.

Do you need the jailbreak or anything to use the snes emulator? or can you just download and run the emulators?

Easiest thing for you is to install the custom firmware and then the SNES emulators. You need both for homebrew, I believe there were some additional calls that the SNES emulator needs... correct me if I remember incorrectly.

It's the easiest thing in the world to do now, download CFW and emulator pup files. Put in USB key, goto PS3. Goto system update. Install update from USB/external storage, afterwards you should have an install package icon under your games. Use that and install the emulator package... Done, easy peasy.

I don't know if the CFW does anything to your PS3 otherwise though... you'll have to look at the release notes. May have some bugs.

Is there a good backup manager than works yet, or a way to get my copy of GT5 to play off the HDD so my PS3 doesn't shake itself to death?

I have a JB-dongle and run hermes v4b2 spoofing 3.50 - but i'd love a dongleless firmware that allows me to play gt5

also, when the hell will the 1.05 GT5 update be JB'ed!?

Ok, this is going to be a bit long, but it's easier than it sounds.
I will tell you how to install the custom firmware first. Then I will tell you how to install the homebrew packages. Last I will cover getting roms to show up in the emulators.

To install the custom firmware.
On your PS3 go to Settings, System Settings, System Information. Make sure that the System Software is 3.55

Grab the custom firmware from http://www.geohot.com
Unzip the file and place the firmware (PS3UPDAT.PUP) on a usb memory stick in the folder structure /PS3/UPDATE/

Insert the USB drive in the PS3 and go to Settings, System Update
Choose "Update via Storage Media"

Choose the Firmware on the usb drive and go through the update process.
The system will reset and beep a few times rapidly, then is should shut down. When the system shuts off, turn the system back on from the console itself, not with the controller.

When the system turns on, there will be an additional option in the game section called "Install Package Files" If you see that option you now have custom firmware installed.

To install the homebrew programs.

If you just want the SNES and Genesis emulators, grab them from these links.

Genesis http://www.emucr.com/2011/01/genesis...2-for-ps3.html
SNES http://www.emucr.com/2011/01/snes9x-v442-for-ps3.html

Unzip the files into separate folders.
In each folder you will see 3 different files ending in the extension ".pkg" The only files you need to be concerned with are the ones that have "geohot-cfw3.55" in the name. (both the SNES and Genesis emulators have that as part of the file name)

Copy the appropriate pkg files to the root directory of the usb stick. (no folders, directly on the drive itself)

Insert the usb stick into the PS3, and choose the "install package files" option under the games tab on the PS3 menu. You should see both files pop up, choose to install them.

That should be it for actually installing the programs.

Now for the roms...
To make things easier, you can keep the roms on the usb stick (it's impossible to put them on the PS3 hard drive without a file manager or an ftp client and I know you want to keep this simple).

Just put your roms on the usb stick in folders labelled SNES and Genesis.

Within each emulator there will be an option to choose your default rom directory. When you choose that option you should see something that looks like this.
PATH: /
app_home
dev_flash
dev_flash2
dev_flash3
dev_hdd0
dev_usb006
host_root

I don't know if the directory structure looks exactly the same on every PS3, but the one you want is the one that has USB in the name.

You should then see the 2 folders containing the roms. Highlight the appropriate folder and press the "square" button on the PS3 controller. (Don't actually go into the folder, just highlight and press square). You may have to exit the emulator and restart it to get the folder change to take place.
Both emulators have similar options and operate in a very similar manner, so this method will work for both emulators.

The emulators are not the most user friendly yet, but they do show you navigation controls at the bottom of the screen. Until you are used to the navigation I would suggest always looking at those before selecting anything. i would also suggest going into the controller options so you can learn how to reset games, exit to the menu, choose different roms etc.

Sorry for how long this is, but I wanted to cover as much as I could. I hope this helps!

Nothing available for "backups" yet. There is a newer firmware update that "should" allow backup managers easier access, but nothing has been written specifically for it yet.

Well, previous jailbreaks have allowed this, but it requires a special usb dongle. This newest exploit will eventually allow anyone to pirate games with relative ease.

Alright, riddle me this. My USB is formatted for a Mac and I've got the update file in the drive, with it titled Colin's Flash Drive/PS3/UPDATE, the the file PS3UPDAT.PUP in there. I plug the drive into the PS3 and when I go to update, it doesn't recognize that the drive is in there. Will the PS3 not recognize a Mac formatted flash drive, or am I doing something wrong?

It won't recognize HFS (mac). You will need to format it with disk utility (most likely FAT)

Goddamn this technology business is starting to piss me off. How do I ensure I've reformatted properly? I've opened Disk Utility, gone to Erase and then clicked Volume Format; MS-DOS (FAT). Drag the .PUP file into PS3/UPDATE, and the damn PS3 still won't recognize it! I tried partitioning the drive as well, but that got me nowhere.

You can also install this for your MAC

You then can use NTFS!

Do you have the option to format in FAT and FAT32? If so, try FAT32.
I have read that some USB sticks are incompatible with the PS3, the only option might be to use a different usb stick.

Does the PS3 allow you to format it at all? In system prefs or something?

I'm at a loss on this one. Does the PS3 recognize the USB drive at all? Does it show up under the Photos, Music or Video tabs? If not then the only thing I can think of is that your USB stick is incompatible, or the Mac is not formatting it correctly.

Oh. Its probably this Berger.

In Disk Utility prior to formating the partition, go to options and select "Master Boot record" and not GUID partition table. Then format via FAT. Should work then.

I'm glad silentsim came along, I know zilch about Macs.

A word of caution about the Genesis emulator. I think the save game function has a bug in it. I created a player and started a season in NHL95, when I loaded the rom again none of that data was there. I tried a different rom (Phantasy Star 2) I saved a game and when I reloaded the rom, the save game was gone. my workaround is to use the emulator save states instead of the in-cart battery backup ram. It may just be a problem on my end, but I thought I would give you a heads up.

EDIT:

I found the problem. The emulator lets you change the savegame data to any folder, the data will be saved to the folder you choose. However the programmer forgot to put in the ability for the emulator to read that data from anywhere but the default folder. So, under the PATHS option, you can point the startup Rom directory to your USB stick. Leave the Savestate and SRAM directories alone though, otherwise your games wont save.
