I am a Facebook user for the last few years, and recently a Twitter follower as well.

I think that Facebook or Twitter or posting on internet message boards is what you make of it. I mean some folks come here and just lurk looking for information, others feel the need to get stuff of their chest to the CP community. I quite often use CP as a news aggregator (which is kind of what I use Facebook and Twitter for).

Facebook for me is a better way of keeping up with distant friends and family - which we used to do via MyFamily, but Facebook let's you do more. And really as part of the older generation I don't like the idea of getting out of touch with what the younger generation is doing. Plus once you use technologies like Twitter and Facebook, you can actually see for yourself what the value and pitfalls of each are.

There are definitely good and bad about all of the internet social media, and by no means does everyone need to participate. I would never tell anyone they absolutely need to be on social media, but I would suggest like all things in life, you give it a try and decide based on the experience versus the perception of others.

If you read their privacy policy, they state something to the effect of sharing your information with "trusted partners" or "trusted 3rd parties". In other words, they will sell the information. And make no mistake, there is huge money in selling demographics. BTW, Facebook has modified their privacy policy many times, which makes it confusing. Do they abide by the policy now, or when you signed up? Do they have the right to use information you posted in a manner that was in effect when a certain policy was in place?

Facebook is the most popular website for a reason. You can be as exposed and involved as you want to be, as evidenced by all the posters above me.

Facebook always struck me as feminine. I watched plenty of respectable young men turn into women, constantly checking their phone for updates. If i need to know someone i either already have their number or will get it and if i need to communicate with them ill call them.

I was a holdout for a long time but I'm glad I picked up an account. Managed to reconnect with some old friends which was pretty cool. It's not like I sit up all night glued to the machine, nor do I end up going out to coffee with people I hate ... it's merely a good way to see what other people are doing.

Sure there are incredibly annoying people that only post about how cute their kids are or what their dog did that was so unique and awesome ... but that's what blocking is for.

Many people seem to take the crazy old man approach to technology and social networking. I hear people ask all the time why anybody would use facebook when they could go out and interact with people in the flesh. I've gone out FAR more because of facebook than I did before it. And as for the "head always glued to the cell phone" argument I guarantee if I wasn't looking at my phone at that particular moment I wouldn't be doing anything constructive.

I think you are missing his point. The only information they can share is information you put up there. If you don't post anything, there is nothing to give. For example, the only personal information I have on Facebook is my name. No phone numbers, no address, no birthday. Nothing. So what is the risk? Maybe they can sell my bejewelled high score?

Granted the risks are great if you are reckless with your personal information, but the media has once again done a wonderful job of selling crap to the ignorant.

the op mentioned his wife in his first 2 posts, so I think he is a good candidate for being a fb regular.

I joined years ago because I had a friend working on a cruise ship. It worked excellent for him to post all of his pictures and stay in touch with a bunch of people without wasting time on emailing each and every one.
Since then, every time I look at it, it is my friends wives updating their status to going to make dinner, or something just as lame. I rarely, like once every 3 months or so look at it anymore.

I'm not on Facebook either, and I've tried (with little success) to stop friends and family posting photos I take there. Their Terms Of Service give them licence to do whatever they want with content you put on their site. I'm not a full-time professional photographer, but I do occasionally sell my work, so I don't like giving Facebook rights to it for free.
