Default I Don't Have a Facebook Account

I don't have a facebook account. It's just not something that has been very appealing to me at all. When it comes right down to it, I guess i'm not really that into letting everyone know that I just ate a cookie, or that I’m in Mexico and my house is empty . Or just the fact that I'm accessible to every Tom Dick and Harry I ever knew in the past.

There are certainly benefits to being on for sure, once and a while Mrs. Ace will show me updates of some of nieces and nephews, and in this day and age I’m well aware that people post their albums on facebook more than other methods.

Given how popular it is and how many people are using it to communicate I was wondering how many other CP'ers aren’t on facebook, and what your reasons are. It seems even the last holdouts I've known are starting to join the party...

I don't either, and have no plans to.

After years of holding out I finally joined. I have kept my friends list to a bare minimum. Mostly just family from out of province.

I only have 1 maybe 2 FB friends that are just old HS friends that I don't talk to anymore.

It is convinient to share pictures or keep up to date on what people far away from me are up to. FB is pretty much useless for anyone I talk to regularly except for those random, pointless updates people post.

You don't have to share everything or be friends with everyone. Just add your close friends.

Exactly. It isn't the medium itself that is good or bad. It is how you use it.

No #### hey, you are in complete control over how accessible you are. Don't let the ignorant press clippings about "privacy" scare you. You are in control of everything you write, post etc..It's a valuable tool in the world today.

^ For me it's more the culture I don't want to be a part of, not that I think the whole world will know my bank account once I sign up.

On that note though, i've seen with Mrs. Ace that FB changes their terms/format slightly every once and a while and all of a sudden stuff she though was only accessable to one group is all of a sudden opened up for all to see. Usually this can be fixed by going back and adjusting to the new settings, but it sure seems like you lose control over the info you decide to share, even if it was only meant for certian people...

Oh yeah, and I'm not on twitter either

Speaking of ignorance. You are certainly not in control of your own data. You have no way of knowing if what you delete is data mined anyway. And you have no real assurances that your data will not be shared or sold off at some point. It may never matter, and it may always be kept out of the wrong hands. But can that be assured? Not a chance.

And not to pick on just Facebook, Google raises similar concerns.

Don't feel bad, you're not missing out on much.

Most of the women on my "friends" list tend to use facebook to air their dirty laundry and relationship status changes. I am constantly going through my friend list and deleting the annoying ones....

You have to be careful about what you post on there as well. It is best not to post your address, phone numbers, incriminating photos etc.

There is no data on my facebook that is of any use to anyone. So you are right i am not assured, but at the same time, what I have is completely useless to anyone. - Don't even use my full name. Again you have complete control. No phone number, no credit card, no address, not even a correct current city. They have my email address, but not the one i actually use.

I use it to I can keep an eye on my daughter's facebook. On occasion an acquaintance from the past will add me. I accept and exchange an email or two and then don't communicate with them anymore.

Ya that is fine and a good reason, if you don't feel any need for it or don't want to bothered, there is nothing wrong with that. I find it useful for a lot of things, so i have some get some benefit out of it, but of course the older i get I think that will change.

You appear to enjoy posting irrelevant and mundane information on the internet. You should try Facebook, I think you'd enjoy it.

If you put data that is THAT important on the internet you should be shot and pizzed on anyway, I find facebook great for sharing photos with family back east and keeping in touch with friends that are far away. I could care less about the "privacy" issues as I don't put anything one there that could bite me in the ass.

That's an interesting approach. If you're stupid enough to use Facebook to it's full and intended purpose, then you deserve what you get?
