It's an external program. not part of iChat.
Upon launching it the first time, you set it up to your email address (of your choice). That is now your facetime email. If the app is closed and someone on an iPhone facetimes your email, it opens, and rings saying who is calling etc.

Don't keep your iPhone too close to your Mac when you're testing it. The feedback is brutal.

I dunno, I think keeping it a seperate lightweight program is better then forcing users to create seperate accounts with iChat and what not.
They need to add some features to it obviously, but for an early beta it is quite nice.

OK, this is awesome. I'm just playing around with it now, and I love the MobileMe integration. Very nice indeed.

Coolest part of today for me was the 'reinstall drive'
Paves the way for future software to be released on USB sticks.

Forbes Magazine is reporting a 15 second bootup time from off, and instant-on wakeup time from sleep.

I think the Air looks pretty damn nice. I can count on one hand the number of times I've needed a CD/DVD drive the last couple of years. If I was in the market, I'd get one.

I used my MobileMe account info to setup the FaceTime app, and then all my contacts appeared... but now that I think about it some more, it's probably just getting everything from my local Address Book (which is synced to MobileMe).

Anyone notice the one thing missing from this applications window that has been there since the beginning of the graphical user interface?

What do I win?
Just tried out facetime with my wife's iphone 4. We had one of those touching father/son connection moments ... only he's upstairs.

No scrollbars!
I heard a rumor about this a couple days ago. I wonder if you can just drag the page around now?

Macbook Air? Waste of money IMO. You can buy a better Macbook for hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Facetime? people use that? really? (I say this as an iPhone 4 owner too)
OS 10.7 (Lion) - more like sleepy kitten. Why would I pay for these upgrades? Am I missing functionality that's worth upgrading my existing 10.6 systems? Just looks like Apple is pushing towards greater control of their ecosystem without really enhancing for the user - but it's still early I suppose.

Agreed, i'm kinda bummed about the whole price point of the thing. $750 starting point and they probably would have sold a ton more. Definitely not worth the $999 starting point. Also bummed that the 13 inch MBP didn't get an upgrade as i'm currently in the market for one.

The old macbook air was significantly more expense, and not as good, and had decent sales. This one should be quite popular. The size is like no other, especially for a full size keyboard etc.

Probably they just appear and disappear like on the iPad.

My Macbook does this easily with a standard Apple-issue SSD. Should not come as a shock to anyone.

You’ve got to be joking. $750 gets you a 64 gig wifi iPad. The 11.6” MBA is a significantly higher value proposition than an iPad considering the parts inside and the functionality it offers. If anything, the Macbook Air makes the plastic Macbook look like a ridiculous rip-off, not the other way around.
This ain’t no Atom based netbook. This is a full fledged sub-notebook competing more with the likes of the Dell Adamo and Sony Vaio, neither of which are cheap, if you haven’t noticed.
People will complain about price, and I can guarantee right now Apple is going to sell a BAJILLION 11.6” Macbook Air’s. You’ve got a full Mac notebook in almost the same form factor as an iPad (certainly very close to the same form factor when you put the iPad into anything other than the thinnest of cases).

You get a smaller screen, slower processor, less battery time, a smaller hard drive for the same price as a mac book. I'm not sure the reduced size is worth it.
