Are the talking smileys one of the advertisers that refuse to be on a site with swearing? If so, I'm going to have to post the transcript of George Carlin's seven words routine.

The mods in this thread have made a perfectly reasonable business case for banning swearing - advertisers will pay less or not at all and they will lose members. I would do the exact same thing if I owned this site. It has nothing whatsoever to do with showing a certain level of decorum.

The prescribed limits (no swearing) of appropriate social behavior within a set situation (CalgaryPuck).
So, your right. It has nothing to do whatsoever with decorum except that it has everything to do with decorum.

Haha. You should have finished reading the wiki article where it provides a little more context for your definition (your excerpt is in blue; the funny part is in red):
Quote:
The word decorum survives in Chesterfield's severely reduced form as an element of etiquette: the prescribed limits of appropriate social behavior within a set situation. The use of this word in this sense is of the sixteenth-century...
|
I'm not trying to be argumentative - when I read your response I was a little embarrassed at my misinterpretation of the word so I went to some sites to see what it actually means, fully expecting to see your definition. Instead, I found the following definitions for decorum.
Dictionary.com
Quote:
noun
1. dignified propriety of behavior, speech, dress, etc.
2. the quality or state of being decorous; orderliness; regularity.
3. Usually, decorums. an observance or requirement of polite society.
|
Oxford
Quote:
behaviour in keeping with good taste and propriety
|
Merriam-Webster
Quote:
propriety and good taste in conduct or appearance
plural : the conventions of polite behavior
|
I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea. In 2010 Decorum refers to polite, tasteful, dignified, etc. speech (in our context). We can't swear on CP because it's bad for business, not because we should be exercising a degree of decorum on this site. But yes, if this was 1510 you would be right.

No, I think decorum is a good word. In the absence of other social cues which moderate people's interactions with each other, discussions around here get heated enough without adding in the fun of profanity.
So it's also an effort to keep things civil, to keep people reasonable, orderly... decorum works for me.

Are you kidding me? As mentioned before, virtually every swearword is freely used on broadcast TV (the standard for censorship) including the F-word.
I guarantee you every person (incl. ladies and minors) who is on the internet browsing these forums is not offended by these words, they're part of daily life. Just because they were offensive back in the 60s, doesn't mean they still are.
But at the end of the day, ya, its a private site and whatever the owner wants will rule the day, but doesn't mean we can't have a debate over it.
I think there should be a filter for the F-word, and then everything else is up to the mods discretion. (To maintain a level of civility). Posting the s,b or other words shouldn't be filtered nor subject for infractions (if they even mean anything).
|
I guarantee that you are wrong. I take offense to most foul language, most specifically the f-word. I think it is low class, and it shows a lack of intelligence to use such crass language.

I don't have issues with not posting nudity or profanity, but the first post is this thread isn't that clear. Adding no nudity at all would kind of help.
"Please link NSFW or content containing profanity and label it a such rather than embedding.. I know we've let the rules be relaxed here, but we need to clean it up a bit. Thanks."
I got my p p slapped for posting a link to a poor quality photo of a fat naked lady sitting on a bed that looked like Homer Simpson.
I know that ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law, but being a newbie, who took the time to read the initial page, a simple warning would have sufficed. Instead some heavy handed mod has blighted me with a mark on my permanent record. This could affect my credit rating and my ability to find suitable employment.

Relax dude - infractions are just a way of us letting you know that you've broken a rule. It is basically what you are describing - a 'warning'.
We don't appreciate you calling any of us "heavy handed" and that likely isn't going to gain you much favor down the road.

I like the censored version of Scarface.
"Where'd you get that scar tough guy? Eating pineapple?"
or
"This is paradise, I'm tellin' ya. This town is like a great big chicken just waiting to get plucked."

or heck, even just leave something like *bleep* instead of just removing the word.
In cases where someone slips up and accidentally throws a swear into their post, just taking out the word can sometimes make things kinda confusing.
|
I used to visit a forum where the mods randomly selected words and replaced them with other words that made no sense. No one knew what the words were so every once in a while you'd come across a sentence that makes no sense because it had a word in it that was replaced.
I think they had also replaced "hand" with "d*ck skinner" which produced many laughs.
