If you know the details that contract isn't as bad as it seems. Sure it was 63 million over 7 years, but the guaranteed money was all in the first two years. Essentially it was like franchising Cassel for two years and than having 5 more years after that if he did work out.

If Cassel doesn't perform than they can axe him with zero cap penalties after this year. It made sense from the standpoint that it's better to take a guy like him surround him with a bad team and try to improve the team in those two years. Come next season, or whenever the NFL gets going if there is a lockout, the team will be in better shape for a young QB to come in, or for them to find a good veteran who comes available. Whereas say they drafted a guy like Sanchez with that #3 pick in 2009, they'd pretty much be paying him the same and he'd be ruined by now.

I think it's easier for a young guy to come to a team with a decent line and skill positions than eventually that guy can take over the team. Basically like whats happened with Flacco of the Ravens.

The Chiefs don't try to pretend that they're a mano a mano group of stud athletes who will beat you one on one. They know damn well that they need to put in a group effort, and that they need to win the return yardage battle in every game. Paying attention to details like this will make the difference between a talent lacking squad scratching out an 8-8 record while the super athlete team who doesnt' watch details continues to put up 5-11 records in spite of all their talent.

McCluster and Arenas deserved praise last night because when you factor in the 160 punt return yards, the 40 yards on the fumble return and kick return yardage, suddenly that 400 to 197 total offence imbalance evens out.
You sound like an overly defensive Chiefs fan. I didn't mean my comment as an attack on the Chiefs... I was simply responding to the non-stop love for those two on yesterday's broadcast and the comment that they "look to be the real deal" after only contributing to special teams and after only one game. I think the commentary was unwarranted (along with the absolute love affair for Rivers) and the "real deal" comment was woefully premature. Even if they both turn out to be incredible return men, where is Dante Hall and Devin Hester? That's right, neutralized by special teams coaches and above average special teams schemes.

But hey, if two yet to be proven returners get you Chief's fans high, more power to you. I'm still searching for a Raiders high...

I have no doubt that Cassel will be cut next year (if they play) but still the Chargers aren't that great and wouldn't it be a shame to miss out on the AFC West title because the QB has a noodle arm?

I would hold off on any claims that Arenas and McCluster are "the real deal" and not just other versions of Dante Hall or Devin Hester. Other than the one big punt return by McCluster (which was great) neither added much to the offense or defense.

McCluster
Rushing: No yards on 1 attempt.
Receiving: 9 yards on 2 attempts.
Punt Returning: 3 for a 33.3 average with 1 TD and longest at 94 yards.
1 Fumble.

Arenas
1 tackle, 2 PDs
3 kick off returns for a 19.7 average and longest at 26 yards.
Two punt returns for a 30 yard average.

If they both establish themselves as dangerous return men but nothing else (although Arenas may contribute more defensively and not show up on the stat sheet) they can be quickly neutralized by a good punter/kicker like Hester and Hall were. It won't take long for special teams coaches to figure that out. If I'm a Chiefs fan, I would want to see McCluster brought in as a scat back to see if he can be a poor-man's version of Westbrook or Harvin.

Again, not to rain on your parade, but I didn't think either of these two deserved the praise they were getting during the broadcast nor afterwards.
Arenas isn't going to get a lot playing time right now unless somebody gets injured. The Chiefs are pretty deep at the corner back position. I think he is only going to play in nickel situations.

As for McCluster, I think any WR with the Chiefs is handcuffed with Matt Cassel as a QB.

I certainly hope so. Look at all the negative press about Mark Sanchez this morning. Cassel was 10/22 for 45.5%, 68 yds, 1 TD for a rating of 68. Sanchez was 10/21 for 47.6%, 74 yds for a rating of 56.4. Cassel gets interviewed at center field on national TV after the game. Sanchez is a bum who needs to be run out of New York. Big perception difference between winning and losing with virtually the same stats.

That's highly doubtful. He's already pouting because he has to play NT in the Skins 3-4 defense, I don't see how it would help anyone if he just went and pouted in New York. Well, it would help Washington I suppose!

I guess Bill liked what Fragile Fred Taylor brought to the table.

From what I understand Cassels contract is worded that he has a club option this year if he doesn't put up the stats then KC cant cut him loose. I hope he doesn't get those stats....

I don't get it on several levels.

1. Why is this guy not the starter in NE?
2. Why does Denver need another RB?
3. Did NE make this trade prior to the announcement that Ryan Grant was done for the year?

Let me look. I saw them before and cant remember. Pretty much needs to be in the pro bowl and have a pretty dang good year.

As a chiefs fan I would love to cut him loose. There are some decent rookies coming out this year.

???? Okay, dude...that post makes little sense.

If Cassel doesn't put up the stats, than KC can't cut him. So if he sucks, they have to keep him?

Must be that if he does put up stats than the Chiefs have to keep him, but at that point his salary wouldn't be that high, they could make him a backup. And he'd be a serviceable backup.

Tried to answer. I like the move just fine. When healthy Maroney can be a beast, is already familiar with the "NE scheme" so can step in and play and Denver only gave up a 4th for him. They got back Maroney and a 6th. Good deal all around.

I think this is a self-guilt apology and investigation. Nothing really happened.

And Portis is just stupid. Many women do a very good job and are professional in a locker room as beat reporters.
Not to get too off topic here, but I don't really understand why women are allowed in the locker room while guys are changing, showering, etc. in the first place. Sorry to be a prude, but it seems a tad inappropriate to me. Unless this is standard journalism, I don't know. Are male journalists allowed access to WNBA locker rooms while the athletes change?

As someone who has Moreno on his fantasy team (a keeper for christ sakes!) I disaprove of the Maroney trade to the Denver Broncos.

Pro Bowl huh? Fat chance of that happening. Unless 13 other AFC QB's get injured and can't play in the Pro Bowl.
