You don't have to worry about them anymore, I've been playing D exclusively for months.
Lame maybe, but it's in the game and to win you have to a) know the exploits & b) know how to defend against them.
ESPECIALLY against frenchies...

You can't hit players off the face-off anymore. Last year you could do 2 hits then it was interference, now you can't even touch him or you'll get a penalty.
It is really killing me while playing as a forward.

If you're skating backwards down the middle of your side of the ice (right side for me), and you see the opponent coming down along the boards, if you step into him now, it's a charging penalty. The announcer even says that if you take three steps before hitting someone, it's a penalty.
I wonder if they tightened up on the charging calls to try to force people to use the new hip checks instead. Whatever their reason, it's pretty ######ed.
|
that's gonna hurt my defensive style...I love crushing guys against the boards

I got drafted #1. Unfortunately, I got drafted to the Oilers.
Going to have to redo this and tank.

They made the smallest tweak that has now allowed this game to take over my life.
I love Be-A-Pro Mode, but I could never get the camera quite how I wanted it. I'm the extremely rare (i.e. only person I've ever met) that vastly prefers playing down to playing up. In the last two you couldn't adjust your camera to be ice level going down, it was always going up. Eventually turned me off of the whole mode. Now I can make it ice level going down, and I'm addicted.
Life = over.

I loved this game on Pro difficulty, and then I started winning majority of my games. I go to All Star and the goalies are all playing like Kipper and opposition is starting to outskate me no matter who I am. Pain in the a$$ right now, will have to work with sliders.
Be a GM is also pissing me off because apparently improving trade logic meant lets just make Redden's contract immovable, who cares about the others *cough Souray*.
I love that RFA is in but I would have been happy with a whole damn overhaul on the stupid EA sim engine and CPU GM logic. I need to win the lottery and buy EHM back, that is how AI works.

You'll notice it when you play against someone. Just twirl is circles to avoid every hit/poke check/stick lift, and not even trying to set up an offensive play after they get the lead.
And those that abuse the stick lift, I hate them too.

Im debating whether to start my Be a GM mode or waiting until the roster update.
Taking a look at the Flames roster they dont have Howse, Cameron, Bennett, etc being our property at this point, that will likely be fixed during the roster update though.
Just noticed you dont get a 1st round pick or a second round draft pick in your first draft.

For all the commentssaying gameplay feels largely the same after first impressions, I would suggests giving more time with the game and posts your thoughts afterwards. The majority of work done to the game this year aren't flashy new features that pop out at you right away. There's a lot of depth and fundamentals changes that blend together in making the AI much smarter and makes the game play more realistic. You may find it to be a far different game from previous years once you get more time in.
For me, this is easily a much bigger change from the previous version then NHL 10 was. Maybe one of the biggest leaps in changes since NHL 07/PS2 > NHL 08 Next Gen.

Thank you for this info, that is very helpful. If they have 4 contract cards most of my problems should be wiped out. In addition I discovered today the trading area for contract cards. Anytime you need one or two, an 8-10 game contract card can be had for 150 pucks. They seem to come up for auction every 2 or 3 minutes, and few seem to utilize them. If you can save up for the peewee pack (and it has 4 cards in it), that's the better deal, but if you just need one contract the trade area is great.

lol how's your boycott going? Sorry man, HUT is very addictive and very awesome. I'm learning a bit more about the system and I'm figuring out how to keep the core together ... I find that very fun. Also trying to score a flames jersey is sweet. You just have to find the disgusted Vancouver fans that get them in the jumbo packs.
I'm currently saving up for my jumbo ... hopefully only a few more games. Once I get the jumbo I'll focus on getting some peewee packs and loading up with contracts on my stars.

FKKKKKKKKKKKKKK I won the Mem in BAP and got drafted first overall by guess who? The Edmonton ######ing Oilers. Goddammit anyways.
Really digging the game though. Physics are sweet, the faceoffs are nice, and best of all...they fixed the offside pass rule! Gonna have to attempt a few hipchecks now, as I keep forgetting it's R3.

Hmmmm,
This game is slowly growing on me. Just swallowed my pride and put it on Pro/Normal. All-star is freaking insane. Starting to learn the AI workarounds.

I'm really enjoying it.
I just played a series of games with someone who played hockey as a teenager but hadn't touched an NHL console game in more than 7 or 8 years, and had only played PS3 once before.
By the end of the second game, we were really starting to develop chemistry. His instincts on where to go and what to do, even though he was uncomfortable with the physical controls.
I am loving the hit selection and physics. makes my defensive positioning all the more integral.

Pretty well considering I'm in another country.... I was kidding about the boycott, but I really do hate these types of game modes, and the worst part about it is that people are actually playing it. I understand why people would enjoy building a team and keeping it together.... but not when they are doing so by opening packs of cards. An online franchise mode would blow this HUT thing out of the water.
BTW what does the H stand for? U=ultimate T=team I'm guessing, but what's H for? Hockey? If so not only does the game mode suck, but so does the name of said game mode.
