General comparisons between civilizations are mostly mind-numbingly dumb anyway. Does Morrisey want to talk about the West's human rights record? We butcher millions of our own citizens every year and barely bat an eyelash.

I'm sure he does, since he's a libby songwriter. I don't think he's a moron, he's a good poet, and morons aren't good at poetry.

Poet is a term thrown around loosely these days.

Well, you've obviously got problems. Maybe take a break from the Internet and fix that wall, eh?

How come when I opened this thread I knew Peter12 would be in here stirring the pot with his nonsense. What the hell does abortion have to do with the topic? Jesus....

Yes, but I think it's fair for the more brilliant among the pop musicians to be considered poets.

So, the point is that when we start making racist comments in order to stir up attention for a particular issue we think is important, or we are just trying to get people to recognize us before we release our big autobiography, it's maybe best to look deep into some of the cruel and inhumane things that our society is responsible for.
Did anyone read the article that I posted? I just put it up for populist corellation.

Populist corellation? If you're going to use big words in order to make people think you're smart/pompous, shouldn't you at least spell them correctly?

By bring up abortion you are stating that:
A) Abortion was invented by the west.
False. Abortion was invented by nobody really, since ancient times women would just mix up concoctions of poisonous herbs to terminate their pregnancies. Abortion is by no means a new or western concept.
B) That abortion only exists in the west.
False. Bringing this back to China, there were 13 million abortions in China in 2009. Culturally, they are still having major problems with sex-selection abortion and the one child policy.
If aborting fetus that are girls or killing/throwing away baby girls after birth is not a major human rights violation then I don't know what is.

Wow! You really lined up those strawmen and knocked the crap out of them.
A and B had nothing to do with his answer.

When Henry the 8th threw the catholic church out of England he allowed a portion of Benedictines to stay because the high and mighty used them to abort their mistresses, they being the experts on herbal concoctions, always think of that when the girlfriend wants some kind of cocktail based on that desperate liquor they make.

As for something to brag about...I agree. It isn't about bragging rights. It isn't about looking better than the other guy, but it is about recognizing that another organism is giving up their life to sustain ours, and respecting that and treating them accordingly before that moment. It isn't always possible, but when it is, I think it is important. And no, I am not a hippie, pretty far from it. Serial killers kill things just for that - to kill. Killing an animal for food and sustenance is pretty different.
Why defend obvious cruelty if it is not necessary? You can hide so many things under the "their culture is different and who are we to enforce our values on them" rug, but truly this one is a fairly easy one to find a compromise with.

This.
Well said.
I eat meat. As big a dog lover as I am it kind of drives me crazy that they are meat in some countries but all I can ask...be it a dog or any other animal really....is that they are killed as quickly and as painlessly as possible. No animal, human or otherwise, should suffer in their final moments. That's my thinking.
I'm not a hunter but I love moose, deer, elk and all that meat. I just have no interest in killing them myself. If I could guarantee that I could swiftly drop an animal with no suffering I would do it, but I can't so I don't. It would bother me if I shot an animal and it didn't die right away because of me and suffered needlessly.
I'm not trying to be a hypocrite being a meat eater and I'm not naive enough to believe there is no suffering 'over here', but I think we as a culture are a considerably less tolerant of suffering, particularily for no reason.
