Nope but my wife grew up in the USA, her brother lives in Texas (actually right now he's over in Iraq), and she has a lot of other family living in the USA so I regularly hear their opinions on the US justice and correctional system.

As for the Canadian justice system, you don't have to personally experience it in order to have an opinion on it. All you have to do is watch the numerous documentaries on it, read the newspaper, and regularly see how little time convicted criminals here in Canada, actually spend in prison. It is quite common for them to be released after serving 1/8 of their sentence (day parole).

The random opinions of your family and internet posters is probably not the best source of expertise on various criminal justice systems.

And to your previous post, let's just go back to the fact that significant funding would need to be found for prison construction in order for sentences to be served in their entirety. You seem to be treating that as if it's a non-issue. Also, increased incarceration rates have not been shown to lead to reduced crime rates AFAIK.

Are you taking aim at their correctional system in general, or specifically for Lohan being released early? I'm pretty sure most, if not all, people who have committed similar small crimes are released this early.

This could be, and very possibly is, very true. However, it must be obvious that if a lot of people have this opinion, the "best source of expertise" must not be getting their points across very well... or a lot of people just don't believe what they are saying.

The Americans already imprison more people per capita than anyone, WAY more (last week's Economist). To have the facilities (prisons) and personnel (unionized guards) to keep people like Lohan in jail for a full term would be incredible misuse of public funds. Lohan is a train wreck and a clown, but do I need her in jail to feel "safe"? It's called diminishing returns - after a point, you are spending way more on jailing people than you receive in benefits ("public safety", "justice", "deterrence", etc).
One day, people will see the light and realize that gladiators is the only real solution - until then, the debates will continue...

Or the general population and most internet posters are too lazy to actually look at the facts and prefer to take the opinions of "news" outlets as unquestionable fact.

It's the definite downside of the internet and the 24 hour news cycle, actual facts get distorted behind attention grabbing headlines and know nothing talking heads.

I think Lohan would do well in Gladitorial combat so long as she doesn't enter The Eliminator with too much of a disadvantage. The real test would of course be the ability to handle the cargo net before taking a ride on the zip line.

I would like to see her with a trident and net against Homolka with a shield & sword. Come to think of it, Lohan's crimes do not warrant combat to the death. She should just be sentenced to starring in 5 porn films...

I offered them the free use of the CaptainCrunch rehabilitation facility which ironically is in my basement.

They have yet to return my phonecalls.

You know, whether or not Lindsay deserved to go to jail is another argument.

My argument is why the bull**** sentence when everyone knew it was bull****. I doubt there was a single person on here who believed she would spend 90 days in jail. Lets get some honesty in sentencing. The judge (who is part of the judicial and correctional system and who very well knew exactly what would happen) should have said "You are hereby sentenced to 13 days in prison".... and there would be no early release.

Thats what really burns my @ss. The dishonesty in sentencing in the system. They make a big deal that some bad@ss gets sentenced to 10 years and it turns out that he serves nowhere near the amount... in fact, usually just a small percentage of the total term.

Except for the fact that had she been sentenced to 13 days and acted like a total lunatic for those 13 days she'd still be out after 13 days, at least this allows some leeway for holding those who cause problems while in prison as well as providing an incentive for prisoners not to cause problems.

If you act like a total lunatic, your 13 days becomes a "hard" 13 days. No tv, go to bed early with no supper, no phone priveleges. Act like a child, get treated like a child.

Does this mean you want to be serving hard time on CP?

And you still only have to be there for 13 days. Under the current system it would be 90 hard days. Seeing as you seem to always come down on the side of harsher punishment I'm rather baffled by your stance here.

I just believe in truth in sentencing. Yes, I do consider a lot of sentences too lenient... but to say that so and so is sentenced to 10 years and they only serve 2 is bull****. When the news comes out, after a trial and the criminal is sentenced to 10 years, most everyone believes thats what they will serve and if they get of earlier maybe they will have 1/3 or their sentences dropped... but to get 75% of their sentence dropped is bs.... and a scam and a con by the justice system.

I call bull. Its never 90 hard days. Today's criminals have it pretty soft in prison compared to past decades.

I wonder what the rate of recidivism is in Russia or China, where they aren't so lenient towards criminals in their prison system. I suspect if you've ever served time in a Russian or Chinese jail, you will avoid at all costs, going back. .... unlike here in Canada and the USA.

Not saying Canada's prisons should all be like the above mentioned countries, but I think there certainly is a place for them for the hard core criminal element that has no intention to change.
