Grab a short story collection from Gogol... a collection that contains "The Overcoat" would encompass a perceived time of strength for his writing.
Orhan Pamuk's Snow is quite good.
Death of a Salesman was much better than I could have imagined.
Really anything by Vonnegut if you just need a quick read but with depth and humour.
... and so it goes.

I started that series as well, only to find out if I liked the books enough to purchase the board game

Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern
Totally easy reading (I read it in one afternoon) but it's bloody hilarious. It started as a blog, and ended up as a book.
http://twitter.com/mydadsays has a bunch of his quotes.

Your mixing up two authors who write about very similar subjects from different perspectives
Freakenomics and Super Freakanomics are by Levitt and Dubner
Malcolm Gladwell writes Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers
What's funny is the books refer to eachothers theories occasionally. All 5 of the above are worth reading especially the Super Freakanomics section on Global Warming.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmy_(novel)
From the author of Fight Club:
Pygmy is an epistolary novel by Chuck Palahniuk. It was released on May 5, 2009.
The plot revolves around a 13-year-old boy named Agent Number 67 from an unnamed, totalitarian state described as a "mash-up of North Korea, Cuba, Communist-era China, and Nazi-era Germany", as an exchange student to live with an American family from an unnamed Midwestern location as a sleeper agent to execute a terrorist attack on the United States codenamed "Operation Havoc".[1] Nicknamed "Pygmy" by his American family for his diminutive size,[2] he is introduced into the rituals of modern American life such as enrolling in public school, and going to church. On a trip to Wal-Mart with his host brother, in the bathroom he sodomises a bully who had been victimising his host brother. The scene is described in graphic detail. This is only the first of many acts committed by the operative in order to adjust to American life, while preparing with his fellow operatives, also masquerading as exchange students, to execute "Operation Havoc".

If you liked Into Thin Air you should also read "The Climb". It's Anatoli Boukreev's account of the same year on Everest and it provides another perspective of the events that occurred.
Krakauer really piled on Boukreev so it's a bit of a rebuttal as well. Maybe not as eloquently written but it's a good read.

If you haven't yet read the Song of Fire and Ice series, you need to.
The first book is being made into a HBO series that will air in the Spring I believe. But be warned, it will ruin fiction novels for you, and the series is not yet done (still 2 books to complete it).

The last book I went to buy was the Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac. I went up to the counter to pay and some hipster told me it was the greatest book ever and the only thing he read on a two month long road trip. I thanked him and told him that I didn't want it anymore.
I also need book suggestions.

I'm waiting for the TV show version of this. Seriously, with William Shatner as the dad it can't go wrong. Actually, it could go very very wrong. But it'll be entertaining either way.
