He altered his swing timing in August last year because Cito noticed that he was popping a bunch of pitches back, so he got him to start his swing a bit earlier in the pitcher's delivery. He was brutal in August but then hit 10 HR's in September, tore it up in winter ball, and has 25 already this year.

If he signed for Overbay money on a 3 year contract, I wouldn't be opposed to that (7 million per)

Bautista does offer a couple of other things, one is that for a latin player he is pretty well educated. He can act as a liason for a guy like Escobar and his team mates. Given how much talent there is among spanish speaking countries, a guy like that can be pretty valuable for a team. Especially since the Jays do look like they want to get serious about going after some of these free agents from places like Cuba and Venezeuala.

He is also a good athlete who is pretty versatile. In that Fan590 interview last week AA mentioned that there are not that many pure right fielders in the game right now who can make that throw to third base from the outfield.

But there is no doubt that the power numbers this year are a serious outlier from the rest of his career. Is he a good platoon guy who can play several positions and offer occasional power with a decent on base percentage? Or is he a guy who is a legitimate slugger who gives you above average power as a corner outfielder? You are gambling a bit if you think it's the latter.

Yes Bautista playing multiple positions is the key. If the Jays can get a power 3B then he can play in LF or RF.

Great job sweeping the O's. Now gotta sweep the Royals. Must sweep bad teams to have any chance at all in the race.

These next couple weeks are key, the Jays don't really play any quality opposition for the next 12 games or so, with another go with Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit and KC.

Gotta win them all.

Remember the Rockies a few years back when they went on a crazy streak of something like 20 out of 25 just to get a one game playoff which they won (in another crazy game)? Jays need a run like that.

The Jays season has been a success other than that ridiculous sweep in Cleveland a month back. It's like all the bats died at once.

I guess the race for that is on. HOwever, there are no 60 win teams like the yanks who could get there before LA reaches fifty. I look at it now and there is a lot of parity. There are a couple of tough divisions and then there are strong divisions on either side. The al east is tougher than the Nl west though. There is soon to be 3 60 win teams with 1 50 win team in the al east. Where as the NL West will all be at 60 around when the jays get there concurrently.

Baseball is more competitive than I thought. I still feel that the AL east is the biggest beast of them all. I think the only team the jays didn't compete against in interleague was the rockies. But we played nearly everyone in the west. Nice scheduling Bud.

I certainly think that the East is the toughest, mainly because of the 3 at the top. Just had looked at the NL standings prior to your post and remembered how close it was in the West and how each team was having a really good year so the 50 wins number stood out in my mind.

Another 2 run esco-bomb. Wow, like change of scenery much?

and here is another article that captures an interview with JP and he has some interesting bits. One bit sticks out and that is regarding Rolen's situation. He did not want to be in Toronto due to his family being so far away.

Can you tell us about a major deal that you were a part of and why we may have never heard about it?

I can’t say monumental, there has been enough stories of really come close and not pull things off on just different types of players. But I had a trade done a couple of years ago where the trade was finalized, I won’t mention the players, but a pretty prominent player. Had him traded, everything was all set, told the president this is what we are trying to do, kept him in the loop. I went back, already signed off with the team, I said, I’ll just get right back to finalize, let me run it by my president.
I went and told the president and the president told me, You know what, I’m a really big fan of that guy, and I think the fans are, too. I think if we trade him, we’re really going to catch it. And I said, OK, it’s your call. I said I recommend we do this, but he said no, and we didn’t trade him and the guy we could have traded him for is absolutely tearing it up right now. So, that’s why you can’t be a fan when you make those choices.

I wonder who that was?

Not sure Rios was ever a big enough fan favorite that the brass would worry about a trade losing ticket sales.

I'll say Vernon Wells before the big contract.

I don't think they would have thought about trading Wells considering he was the second most important player for the Jays behind Halladay.

Yeah but it couldn't have been Rios, Rios was never important or a fan favorite.

My next guess would be Delgado. BIG fan favorite.

Thank god my expectations are so low for this season, because if the Jays were just a little stronger in those late innings, this team could be competing for the division lead.

I was thinking it could have been Wells, but that would have been in 2007. More interesting would be who is the player he could have had. When I hear this guy is ripping it up now, makes me think it has to be a hitter.

Cheering for the Bluejays is really frustrating. I've been a pretty big fan of them since I was about 12 and they have always sucked. The MLB really needs a salary cap so the smaller teams can compete.
